1/5/21 - Harper Perennial: 2021 - $17.00
Ann Patchett, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth, delivers her most powerful novel to date: a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.
The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.
Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

1/5/21 - Thomas Nelson Publishers: 2021 - $26.99
Walk in the shoes of the disciples, as New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin brings their stories to life with his storyteller’s perspective.
In the first century, believer didn’t just mean someone who heard and agreed with Jesus; it meant someone who acted on that belief. And when the outside world saw the faith of these new believers, they declared “they turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).
That’s the kind of believer Charles Martin wants us to be. The kind who understands that the truth of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection is so powerful, it reshaped history. The kind of believer who lives with that same world-changing faith today.
In his second non-fiction work, he uses his talents as a novelist to walk you through the lives of the disciples in the aftermath of the Resurrection and as they spread the message of the Gospel and “turn the world upside down”, leading up to Paul’s ministry in Thessonalica. In his beloved lyrical style, Martin illuminates key moments from Scripture and shares stories from his own life as a disciple.
With the same depth, sensitivity, and emotion that have made his novels beloved to millions, Martin will helps you engage with your faith in a new and inspiring way.

1/19/21 - Balzer & Bray: 2021 - $17.99
Artemis Fowl meets Men in Black in this exhilarating debut middle grade fantasy, the first in a trilogy filled with #blackgirlmagic. Perfect for fans of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, the Percy Jackson series, and Nevermoor.
Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive. Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good.
So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton—if only she can wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real.
Now she must compete for a spot against kids who’ve known about magic their whole lives. No matter how hard she tries, Amari can’t seem to escape their intense doubt and scrutiny—especially once her supernaturally enhanced talent is deemed “illegal.” With an evil magician threatening the supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she’s an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesn’t stick it out and pass the tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton.

1/12/21 - Balzer & Bray: 2021 - $19.99
International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood.
If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.
Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.
Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.
Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.
When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can't just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

The Push by Ashley Audrain
|
|
The Push is powerful, gripping and brutally honest look at motherhood and the inherent nature of some children. This very readable literary work explores the possibility that some women are just not meant to be mothers and some children, regardless of how they are raised , are just evil. Reminiscent of We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Push is a thought provoking, difficult, but very compelling read that looks at generational child abuse, women who do not want to be mothers, women who want to be good mothers but question their ability, family dynamics when one parent either does not see the truth or refuses to admit it exists and how one copes after a devastating tragedy.

FBI agent Reed Markham also has demons in his closet . He cant get over seeing the condition 14 year old Ellery was in when he rescued her from her kidnapper and abuser and even though she is now grown and a police officer, albeit, a suspended one, he keeps trying to rescue her again, this time from herself. If you havent already met Ellery and Reed this is a great time to begin as Ellery once again puts justice before her safety and her career and pulls Reed along with her.

Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain
|
|
Big Lies in a small town is the story of the artist Anna Dale in Edenton, NC in 1940. It is also the story of the artist Morgan Christopher in Edenton, NC in 2018. Each story is a fascinating look at a small southern town including the social mores that prevailed. Each story is a fascinating character study of women who have faced tragedy and hardship and how they overcame it. Each story is a story of love and friendship. Each story could have stood on its own but they are woven together brilliantly to produce a novel that will make you just as curious as Morgan was to find out what happened to Anna and why in the world did she paint such gory things into a mural that was supposed to be hung in the town post office as a representation of the town of Edenton. If you love great southern fiction, if you love a mystery, if you love rich characters, and if you love history and art you will not want to miss this fabulous novel.

Waiting for the Night Song by Julie Carrick Dalton - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE
|
|
If you only read one book this year, this should be the one. It really puts many current issues such as climate change, immigration, and racism into a perspective you can feel personally by immersing yourself into the story and identifying with the characters in the book. Waiting for the Night Song is a lyrical and amazing story about nature and what will happened to it if we continue to ignore climate change. It is the story of wonderful, productive and caring people who live in fear because of immigration laws, it is a story about childhood trauma and the effect it has on the three children involved, it is a story about determination and doing what you believe is right regardless of the consequences, and above all else it is a heartfelt story about family and friendship and just how far and how many lies one will tell, or how many secrets one will keep to protect them. Everyone who loved Where the Crawdads Sing should put this at the top of their list. My favorite quote from the book: 'When someone says you're overreacting, but you know you're right, keep reacting until it's over.'

With help from some new friends (including a pro baseball player), Vivy learns to stand up for herself. 12/29/20 - Tor Books - $18.99
Linus is a case worker for magical children, but despite his many years of experience, nothing has quite prepared him for the especially exceptional children and their caretaker he's to meet on his new Level 4 Classified case. Despite the people in the nearby village trying to put them in their place and send them away, Linus discovers that these magical youth are really just children with children's dreams and seeks to show others how much they matter. While this book is technically fantasy, it's not so much about magic as it is about prejudice and fear and hate, and how people are absolutely capable of change, both individually and inspiring change in others. This is a beautiful book that I will undoubtedly revisit many times in the future.

The Children's Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin
|
|
Melanie Benjamin is at her best in this historical fiction account of the terrifying blizzard of 1888. It seemingly came out of nowhere and caught the residents of the Midwest by surprise, especially the children and teachers who were preparing to go home for the day. Benjamin looks at the lives of two sisters--both teachers at different schools--and how their decisions that day meant life or death for their students. I spent several late nights on this one!

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

The Merciful by Jon Sealy
|
|
First: Every book club needs to put Merciful at the top of their 'next to read' list. For me, reading is for the most part a private personal experience. I love to read and immerse myself in the story. This book doesn't let me do that. I can't wait for my friends to read this one so we can intellectually deconstruct it. Bottom line; this book forces you to think and to see a story from disparate and various perspectives. The book tells the story of a tragic incident where a young woman riding her bike down a country road late at night is struck and killed in a hit-and-run 'accident.' Days later, after procuring an attorney, a local man comes forward thinking he 'might' have been responsible. Like a rock thrown into a still pond, the incident ripples and radiates in all directions and this book conveys a thoughtful and compelling story of just how the accident affects not only the victim and the perpetrator, but also those close to them and those in the legal system who are responsible for trying the case. Jon Sealy does a masterful job of painting the lives of these characters and exposing the flaws and foibles that make us all human. I highly recommend this thought provoking and compelling novel.

Deep State by Chris Hauty
|
|
Deep State is a compelling page-turner with an unpredictable last-minute twist that will knock you off your feet. Hayley Chill is an Army infantry soldier with an eye on doing more to serve her country. In true, 'snatched from the headlines' fashion, Hayley accepts a White House internship in the administration of a highly controversial and divisive president with apparent strong Russian leanings. This has him in the cross-hairs of 'Deep State' operatives intent on taking down him and his administration. Hayley finds herself caught up in the intricate plot and may be the only one who can stop it. Prepare to stay up late with this one until you reach the epic climax. Perhaps ironically, I really think this book would appeal equally to suspense loving readers on either side of the political spectrum!

I was hooked on the first page, and riveted throughout. This is a story of love and lies, and a story of deceit and betrayal. Many twists and turns unfold, as she attempts to expose this company, and bring this captivating story to its surprise ending.

No Holding Back by Lori Foster
|
|
I really like the plot of this book. Justice is not always possible with mainstream options, but is still needed. Lori has crafted a good plot with engaging characters who did not end up exactly where they planned. This installment focused on two very strong characters and introduced several others I am looking forward to meeting in the next book.

All the Colors of Night by Jayne Ann Krentz
|
|
I enjoy the series with the Paranormal content. It is very interesting and does not engulf the characters or the plot, so if it is not your thing you will still have a great plot and suspense. North has some issues with questions that remain about his grandfather's loyalty, a strange and sudden onset health issue, but in every other aspect has his life well ordered. He excels at his job, lives in a home he enjoys and is challenged intellectually. Sierra is his opposite in so many ways, raised in a free spirited fashion by non-conforming parents, she has started another career path after many failed attempts. North has a high priority job and not much time to find local help, Sierra is available and selected for him, not a comfortable situation. The seriousness of the situation does not leave time for finesse or subtlety on either end. What follows is an intricate plot to try and understand what may have fallen into the wrong hands in the past. The location and exploration of the closed Fogg Lake labs has just begun, so they have no idea how much danger is ahead. This is a great and entertaining series. Lots of suspense, twists and good character development.

Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardner
|
|
When I want a good book, but don't want to do a search for a book I might like, I grab the latest Lisa Gardner book and know I will find a great plot, characters and superb writing. This book just confirms my premise. With an all new cast of characters led by Frankie the book has a fast pace and looks at a darker side of life. Many of us are fortunate to never be the victim of a brutal crime, and your loved one disappearing is a particularly brutal example. When the police have been unsuccessful and hope seems lost Frankie arrives. She is not a retired cop, private detective, well funded or connected. She is a broke currently sober addict on the run from the demons of her past. She is flawed, relentless and brilliant in her determination. Another fantastic production from Lisa, it is a standalone so don't delay!
