How did you get involved in what you do now, and what motivates you at work?
I discovered that there were all these issues in the food industry related to sustainability and animal welfare when I was covering the industry as a journalist and editor. Then, after meeting someone who was working on farm animal welfare some years ago, I realised that we could influence industry stakeholders to move towards a better and more humane food system.
Seeing tangible results of that work keeps me motivated. For instance, over the past few years, weâve seen some producers in Asia transition to cage-free egg production systems.
What are the opportunities for more work to be done in the (Asian) region in terms of cage-free advocacy?
As more multinational and Asian food and hospitality businesses commit to cage-free egg supply chains, and more egg producers in the region transition to cage-free production, there are opportunities in building the capacity of industry stakeholders.
This can involve working with producers, corporate buyers, academics, government agencies and other stakeholders on localised training, research and implementation strategies to ensure that the transition is successful and sustainable in the long term.
