1. Free aids & adaptations

Today sees the publication of a report from the charity Versus Arthritis which shows that thousands of people struggling with this painful condition are unaware that they could get free aids and adaptations to help manage their daily living more easily.

Having the right aids in place can enable people to live independently for longer, reducing the need for care services.

2. More support at Gatwick

The challenges of travelling with a disability feature here not infrequently: air travel can be particularly difficult.

So credit where it's due – Gatwick airport with support from easyJet is trialling a system whereby blind and visually impaired passengers can call a professionally trained agent 24 hours a day to guide them through the airport, help them read documents or flight information, shop or even find their bag on the luggage carousel – all through the camera on their phone.

3. Choosing a pool lift

Increasing numbers of people are taking the plunge and having a swimming pool or hot tub installed at home. Hospitality businesses are also recognising such facilities as a big draw for potential customers.

But what is the best way for someone with a disability to get in and out of the pool or tub?

The answer is, it depends... Happily, Debbie Pearson from The Pool Lift Company has written a helpful guide to choosing the most appropriate lift in any situation.

4. Measuring adaptive equipment

Conor Acheson, an MSc student in Occupational Therapy at Brunel University, has asked us to help recruit participants for his research into available guidance for measuring adaptive equipment at home.

If you are aged 60 or over, have access to a computer and Skype, and have difficulties with any aspects of daily living which you think could be helped by some equipment, such as stair rails, raised toilet seats or bed/chair raisers, you could help progress this project.

You can contact him directly by email 1734482@brunel.ac.uk or phone 0203 289 9245.

5. Remap Superheroes needed!

The brilliant Superhero Tri is back again this summer, at Dorney Lake, Windsor on 17th August.

Everyday Superheroes can raise money for Remap, official charity partners of the event, while having the best fun taking part in the mass sporting event where people with disabilities call the shots and don’t have to worry about cut-off times or equipment restrictions.
