This last weekend, I had an epic battle planned for the players of my current RPG campaign. In a quest to rid a city of its curse, they had to battle an undead dragon. I expected them to seek it out in its lair (a group of buildings within the city), but instead, they managed to lure it out, where a veritable army of archers was waiting.
I should point out they have been building this army for some time after befriending a group of goblins. The long and the short of it was once the dragon was within range, the volleys quickly took it down.
Oh well. Perhaps the next quest, a crypt, will prove more difficult!

Playtesting my plot ideas

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’ve been running RPG campaigns for many years. Not only is it entertaining, but it provides me with the chance to try out various plot ideas and see what happens. I suppose, in a sense, this makes my players guinea pigs or lab rats. Of course, they seldom do what I expect them to, leading me to ponder, ‘what if?’ And that’s where my writing comes in, allowing me to explore other alternatives.
There are numerous examples of this in my books, with some vignettes taken from various campaigns over the years. Indeed, the tribe of Orcs known as the Black Axe (from The Frozen Flame series) was actually created in one of my very first D&D campaigns dating back more than forty years! And yes, just like the Orcs of my books, these were ‘friendly’ and Kirak was their chieftain!
This begs the question: What can I throw at my players next? I do have a few new series I’m working on!!!

The German dirigible Hindenburg was launched in 1936 and operated for a year before the disaster that destroyed it. After the historic round-the-world flight of the LZ 127, also known as the Graf Zeppelin, the Zeppelin Company in Friedrichshafen built the Hindenburg, designated LZ 128.
The ship was designed to utilize Helium for its lifting gas due to its safety (Helium is not flammable), but at the time, it was expensive, being only available in quantity from the US. Unfortunately, the US banned the export of Helium in 1927, forcing the Germans to utilize Hydrogen (a highly flammable gas) instead.
Despite the danger, the Hindenburg operated for over a year before disaster struck. In May of 1937, as the ship prepared to land at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, it burst into flames. In a little over half a minute, flames enveloped the vessel, which crashed to the ground, killing thirteen passengers, twenty-two crewmen, and one of the ground crew. The disaster was the beginning of the end for airship travel.

The first third of Torrent is complete, and I’m reading through it, making a few minor adjustments. After that, I’ll tackle the second act, where things grow more complicated for the main characters.
There are a lot of political changes going on in the Petty Kingdoms, and Carlingen, the setting for Torrent, gets caught up in the middle of them. In addition, this story will also have several revelations, some relatively minor while others have far more significance in the story going forward.
I’d best not write anymore, or I’ll give too much away!

“Perhaps it’s time I took more direct action,” said Charlaine.
“What are you suggesting?" replied Marlena. "That you visit the barons yourself? I fear that might only undermine Sir Hugo’s efforts.”
Charlaine looked out the window. “Yes, I suppose it would, yet I can’t help but feel we’re stagnating here.”
“How can you say that? Since your arrival, the streets of Lidenbach are safer, and even Lord Corbin has fallen silent.”
“Yes, he has, but that only makes me feel worse. I sense he’s up to something. Tell me, am I right to fear that, or am I just imagining things?”
“The history of Halvaria is one of deceit and deception. I would trust your feelings in this.”
“Meaning my fear or that I’m imagining things?”
“I wouldn’t call it fear. Rather, I’d refer to it as cautious mistrust.”
Charlaine laughed. “You’re becoming quite the diplomat.

The men secured the shackles slowly, hesitantly, but Kibure did not resist; he couldn’t. Whatever otherworldly power had come over him in those moments of passion had fled his body the second he realized what he had done…
In a realm where only clerics are permitted to practice magic, Kibure’s inexplicable use of power places him in grave danger. In a twist of fate, the rogue priestess hired to strip him of his power chooses instead to help him escape. Her reasons for doing so are her own, but something worse than death awaits if they are unable to evade the Empire's most potent wielders.
This epic fantasy series will be especially enjoyed by fans of Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Michael J. Sullivan, Edward W. Robertson, Patrick Rothfuss, and Michael Wisehart.

Some lies cut deeper than any sword.
War has come to the fragile city-state of Carenos. A self-proclaimed ‘King of the South’ sows destruction among its outlying villages, cutting a bloody swathe towards the capital. As smoke from the burning wheat fields blackens the sky, Carenos sends a desperate plea for aid to its allies in the north.
Dexios, general of the Thenean phalanx, is one of those chosen to answer the call. After braving the tumultuous Sea of Scales, he arrives in Carenos at the head of three hundred hoplites, determined to put an end to the enemy incursion.
One threat, however, can often hide another. Something is stirring in the shadows of the sun-drenched lowlands, an age-old legend, abandoned and forgotten. Drawn from its den by the need to satiate its ravenous hunger.
And the enticing scent of blood.
