More Than 9,100 Birds Fledged Through State Parks Cavity-Nesting Trails Program in 2022
This is a story I look forward to receiving each year - the Bureau of State Parks annual Cavity-Nesting Trails summary report. The story comes from DCNR's biweekly Resource newsletter to which you can subscribe at the DCNR website.
Fifty-three state parks monitored 2,323 boxes and fledged more than 9,100 birds through the dedicated work of volunteers and staff in 2022.
This year provided many challenges, as the birds -- eastern bluebirds, purple martins, tree swallows, wood ducks, kestrels, and several other species -- were dealing with extreme weather conditions, which greatly affected hatching and fledging success rates.
Since the program’s beginning in 1980, volunteers have fledged more than 162,000 individual birds and more than 20 species.
