Implicit Bias Training Workshop |
|
|
|
Advance registration is required to attend this event. Register using the link: https://njit.webex.com/njit/onstage/g.php?MTID=eab6c227a26cd7cd26d92aeaca4d453b0 Password: bias
Implicit biases are associations about social groups that people may not be aware that they possess. There is research implicating implicit bias as having an impact on many areas such as how medical/health professionals treat patients/clients, employment discrimination, and achievement disparities in academia.
The workshop will increase participants' awareness of implicit race, gender and sexuality biases. Dr. Gibson will present the latest research on assessing implicit biases and understanding their behavioral implications. The workshop will also present strategies that effectively counteract negative implicit biases and foster positive intergroup behaviors/practices.
Participants will also learn effective strategies to mitigate biases in order to create a more diverse, inclusive and equitable organization and community.
About the presenter:
Dr. Bentley L. Gibson is the founder, lead researcher and trainer of The Bias Adjuster, LLC. Dr. Gibson received her B.A. in Psychology from Spelman College and obtained her Ph.D. in Cognition and Development Psychology from Emory University, specifically focusing on the development of unconscious/ implicit bias from childhood to adulthood. Dr. Gibson is currently a tenured, Associate Professor of Psychology at Georgia Highlands College, where she continues teaching and conducting her research in the area of unconscious/implicit bias. She has conducted extensive research on the impact of unconscious/implicit bias on institutions and effective strategies to mitigate bias in order to create a more inclusive climate. The Bias Adjuster’s programs are well sought after globally.

13 Ways to Ensure Trustworthiness in Qualitative Research |
|
How can I persuade my audience that the research findings of my inquiry are worthwhile? Credibility of a qualitative study depends on the ability and effort of the researcher. Strategies for ensuring quality must be built into the qualitative research process rather than evaluated after the inquiry. Students must be proactive during research design and take responsibility for ensuring these criteria will apply to their study.
Dr. Galindo will discuss the meaning and application of trustworthiness criteria, which replaced the concepts of reliability and validity in order to assure the integrity of qualitative research. We describe the benchmarks of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability, and how to apply a variety of strategies to justify the quality of your research. The insights garnered here will help doctoral students obtain a clearer grasp of the application of these concepts.

Although writing an academic text is more than the sum of its parts, knowing how to create and connect those parts is very useful.
As graduate students, you may think “I know how to do that” and it may be true, but don’t you like to improve your mastery of that process?

15 Minute Practical Tips for Researchers - Pulling What You Need as You Read Research |
|
Science is built on many underlying assumptions about research. If you are new to the game you don't understand this way of thinking or what people expect. A lot of that you pick up as you go along by reading research and through your classwork, however this series is dedicated to making the subtle explicit.
Obvious or not you may have research questions - you can ask them at www.wooclap.com/15minutes and they will be answered the next Monday. Can't make the time? No worries, register and you will get the recording.

Dr. Alana is a qualitative researcher, using MAXQDA as her primary tool for coding. In this webinar she is happy to take on student data or questions derived from your work "as data" for discussion and help.
Briefly covered will be - open and selective coding, hypothesis testing, storytelling science, insider research, reflective, reflexive coding, and coding for disconfirming evidence.
Do you have questions and maybe you can't make the live session? Register for the session and then post your question that week on www.wooclap.com/qualresearch

Pre-Recorded Tuesday Nights: Writing Tips Every Grad Student Needs |
|
Academic writing has two major considerations - what you want to say and your skill level in how you say it appropriately for your audience. Too much to cover in one sitting this webinar will be a comparative study across a series of final papers and journal articles to discuss these two basic ideas. It will end with a checklist for all students to take with them through which to critique their work and others.

Reminder: COVID Safety Protocol for Visiting the Office of Graduate Studies |
|
|
|
As part of Phase 2 of NJIT’s Pandemic Recovery Plan for fall, the Office of Graduate Studies continues to be opened at 25% capacity. To reduce health risk, the school is limiting the number of staff members on site at any one time and implementing the following protocol for our interactions with visitors, including students, faculty, and staff.
- If you wish to meet with a member of GSO, please first make an appointment by emailing GSO@njit.edu or that person. Visitors without an appointment will be unable to get an immediate meeting with a staff member.
- By default, most issues and questions will be answered over email, phone, or WebEx to help minimize the amount of in-person contact.
- If an in-person meeting is necessary, our staff will set up an appointment. When you come in for an in-person meeting, you must follow all university public-health regulations, including a self-screening for symptoms before coming to campus, wearing a mask while on campus (including during your meeting), and maintaining at least 6 feet of distance from others.
- If you need to drop off or pick up items, please first contact the person you are dropping off with or picking up from to determine when you should come by.
The GSO staff has been providing service and support for our students and departments throughout the pandemic and will continue to do so remotely and on site while observing university public-health regulations. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our staff and the NJIT community safe and healthy.
