Statewide Virtual Youth Leadership Forum (YLF)

June 19th – June 23rd, 2023

Ohio juniors and seniors with disabilities, you have an AMAZING opportunity to learn more about Self-Advocacy & Leadership Development at the Ohio Regional Youth Leadership Forums. The Ohio Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) is a weeklong career leadership training program.

Participation in YLF can prepare you to become one of Ohio’s future leaders by improving your leadership, citizenship, and social skills.

Employee Opportunities with DeHart Works

Abilities-R-Us is a support group that conducts group meetings to discuss disability related issues of importance to our consumers. This is an opportunity for individuals with a disability to learn from and support each other in a support group setting. Meetings are held once monthly on varying topics.

Young Adult Council, Your Advocacy Counts

Summer Session Starts June 15th, 2023

Individuals 18 to 34 with a disabiltiy

Young Adult Council (YAC) is a statewide community led council, hands-on/internship approach that will provide young adults the opportunity to participate in a realistic policymaking environment.

Explore different advocacy initiatives.
Network with legislators.
Trips to local city council meetings and Mayor’s offices to meet with local representatives.
A trip to the Ohio State House to meet our state representatives.
Visits to the Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council and Disability Rights Ohio offices.

Provider Pay Delay Issue

On February 1, 2023, the Ohio Department of Medicaid changed their billing system which has caused extensive problems with ODM independent providers getting their paychecks. Many entities have been working to resolve this issue. Some providers have not been paid in six (6) weeks. This added salt to an existing direct care crisis wound that has been going on for years. We cannot afford to lose any more providers. Therefore, SIL has been advocating for ODM to resolve this problem. If you know any independent providers who have been having trouble getting paid, please contact me, Lisa Marn, at lmarn@sil-oh.org or 216-731-1529.

Topics that may be covered include self advocacy, independence, effective communication, and community participation. Participants must be Lake County students ages 14-22 years who are eligible for LCBDD services. Doors open at 5:00PM. This is a FREE event. Food will be provided and parent cafe will be open for parent collaboration. 2023 Transition EXPO!

Parents, family members, transition-aged youth with disabilities and their siblings, professionals who support people with disabilities, and others are invited to attend. The 2023 Transition Expo will give attendees the opportunity to prepare for life after high school and to meet representatives from organizations who support youth and their families with successful transition to adulthood.

SIL is pleased to welcome Shantia (Tia) Aikens as a PCA Program Coordinator/Case Manager. Tia started full-time with SIL on January 3, 2023 and is a part of SIL’s team that covers all of Ohio managing the Personal Care Assistance (PCA) Program for Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). Tia brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to our program. Tia is eager to help our consumers become and maintain their independence through the PCA Program.

Personal Care Assistance Program

In order to maintain employment, look for employment, or participate in training for employment, some Ohioans with severe physical disabilities may require a personal care attendant/aide to assist them with activities of daily living (ADLs). OOD’s PCA Program provides partial reimbursement to eligible individuals so that they may hire an attendant/aide.

SIL has COVID-19 self-tests available for your household’s use, at no-cost

Self-tests are easy to use to determine if you have SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. You will swirl a nasal swab inside each nostril, place the swab in the provided tube and check the results yourself. The COVID-19 tests can be self-administered by individuals 14 years of age and older and for those aged 2-13 years of age, with an adult assisting.
