Chiune Sugihara: Google Doodle honours Japanese diplomat who saved Jews from Holocaust

A little-known Japanese diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of Jews during the Second World War has been honoured with a Google Doodle.

The mild-mannered and humble Chiune Sugihara became vice-consul at the Japanese consulate in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1939, just as the conflict was breaking out.

Tens of thousands celebrated the centenary of Lithuania’s military aviation at an event in Šiauliai

On July 27 The Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai hosted Air Show Falcon Wings 2019 marking the 100th anniversary of the Lithuanian military air capability. The event was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The anniversary air show included programs of NATO and partner countries’ military aircraft.

Temporary Residence Permits for Foreign Startups is Extended to Three Years


Changes are taking place in Lithuanian startup ecosystem. This is proven by the increasing emergence of initiatives that improve the business environment for startups. From now on foreign startups wishing to relocate their innovative businesses to Lithuania, will be able to obtain, through the use of 'Startup Visa' programme, a longer term temporary residence permit for the duration of up to three years.

Asmik Grigorian – the star of the Edinburgh International Festival

This August, Tchaikovsky’s best-loved opera Eugene Onegin is coming to the Edinburgh International Festival together with opera world superstar Asmik Grigorian. Lithuanian soprano was recently awarded Female Singer of the Year in 2019 in the International Opera Awards, as well as Best Leading Role at the Austrian Music Theatre Awards 2019.

On July 19th Asmik opened the first night of BBC Proms 2019 performing the soprano part in the colossal Glagolitic Mass by Janáček. Now, she will be taking the iconic role of Tatyana in Barrie Kosky’s directed Eugene Onegin (Komishe Oper Berlin).
