Your weekly source for information related to disaster preparedness.
Recently we established there are resources everyone needs to access during emergencies regardless of who we are in order to function during a disaster. The CMIST memory tool helps us remember and plan for our five functional needs individuals may have in an emergency or disaster. We have covered the C in CMIST- COMMUNICATION, M in CMIST
- MAINTAINING HEALTH, d I in CMIST which is INDEPENDENCE and S in CMIST which is Safety. Supports and Self Determination.
Last but not least is the T in CMIST-Transportation. We need to have a plan for how to move ourselves to safe environments or to locations where resources are being shared physically. You must plan based on these questions:
- ü Can you evacuate your house by yourself?
- Will you need transportation?
- If you need assistance, what kind of assistance will you need?
- If you need transportation, what kind of transportation?
One more questions for you. Do you have a plan in place to insure you have the resources you can Access
in order to Function during an emergency or disaster? Do you know you have access to life sustaining medical equipment or support services which enable you to live independently in your community? If not, then it is time for you to do so.
