- Meet the Plantfluencers
It's no secret that houseplant demand has surged, especially among millennials and Gen Zers. Don't believe me? Just check out #PlantParent on TikTok, it has 565m+ views! According to various sources, the indoor plant industry is expected to see a market size of $700mill by 2025. On this week's ONE THING, I'll share why this could be a thing.
Market Breakdown π¨
- In the past, gardening has always been a baby boomer's activity. But millennials, who are moving to big cities and renting small apartments won't be watering the lawn anytime soon like their parents
- But recently we can see that millennials and Gen Zers are starting to dig plants, not the mango trees that your grandma has in her backyard but small indoor houseplants
- And for good reason, potted plants accommodate the millennial lifestyle perfectly. You are able to fit a little bit of nature into a cramped city space
- Social Media has been a big driver for the indoor plant industry. A lot of big brands and cafes are featuring houseplants against stylish backdrops that appeal to millennials. Instagram influencers like @janethecrazy are educating the public and lowering the barrier of entry of starting indoor planting
- We can also see insane growth from DTC startup, The Sill whose sales have grown 500% year-over-year
Market Opportunities π
- Creating an indoor plant DTC brand is probably the most profitable way to capitalize on this emerging trend but keep in mind that shipping logistics is going to be super complicated
- Sell custom pottery for indoor plants which aren't subjected to shipping complications. Pots can be a great centrepiece for IG, you could give free pots to cafes and let their customers do the advertising for you
- Another opportunity is to build an educational blog. Once you gain enough traffic, you can start to build a community and that will open up so many doors (online classes, merchandise, affiliate marketing etc.)
Although houseplants do require care, they are neither as demanding nor as costly as having an actual pet. I don't know about you but I could definitely add a bit of greenery into my dull life π
