OMAHA

What it is
Directed by Cole Webley, Omaha follows a father who wakes his two young kids before sunrise, loads the car, and tells them they are heading out on a trip. Set in 2008, the film starts like a modest road adventure before it slowly reveals that the father is steering the family through a crisis his children do not yet understand.

Why it stands out
John Magaro brings a nervous, barely contained energy to the father, and the kids feel like actual children rather than movie-kid devices. This premiered at Sundance, and it plays like a road movie where the emotional destination matters more than the miles.

I SWEAR

What it is
Directed by Kirk Jones, I Swear is based on the true story of John Davidson, a working-class kid in 1980s Britain who develops Tourette syndrome at a time when most people around him do not understand what they are seeing. The film follows the shame, anger, and isolation that come with being constantly misread.

Why it stands out
Robert Aramayo gives the story some edge by balancing humor, frustration, and stubborn resolve. The film sounds more interested in the messy truth of self-advocacy than in turning the story into neat inspiration, which is a point in its favor.

TWO SEASONS, TWO STRANGERS

What it is
Written and directed by Sho Miyake, Two Seasons, Two Strangers follows Li, a screenwriter in Japan trying to make sense of her life by turning experience into writing. The film unfolds in two movements, a summer stretch by the sea and a winter chapter at a remote inn, where small encounters slowly gather emotional weight.

Why it stands out
Shim Eun-kyung anchors the film with a performance that feels observant and exposed at the same time. It won the top prize at Locarno, and it sounds like exactly the kind of patient, precise film that earns that sort of honor.

BETWEEN THE TEMPLES

What it is
Directed by Nathan Silver, Between the Temples follows Ben, a small-town cantor whose wife has died and whose sense of direction seems to have gone with her. He has lost his voice, moved back in with his mothers, and is barely holding himself together when his old elementary school music teacher reappears and asks for an adult bat mitzvah.

Why it stands out
Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are a very good match for this kind of offbeat comedy-drama. The hook is quirky, but the movie also seems genuinely interested in grief, ritual, and community life, which gives it more weight than a standard odd-couple setup.

HALF NELSON
Classic pick of the week

What it is
Directed by Ryan Fleck, Half Nelson centers on Dan Dunne, a Brooklyn teacher his students actually trust, and Drey, the student who discovers that the adult she looks up to is privately falling apart. Their connection becomes the core of a film about mentorship, addiction, and the gap between wanting to help and being able to help.

Why it stands out
Ryan Gosling gives one of his rawest performances here, and the movie refuses every fake inspirational shortcut. It is unsentimental, sharp, and still one of the strongest American indies of the 2000s.
