The Countdown Is On for the 2025 Transition Expo! |
|
|
|
Our team is buzzing with excitement as we gear up for this year’s Transition Expo! We’re working hard behind the scenes to bring together a vibrant and informative event for our community.
With more disabled school leavers expected over the next two years, the 2025 Expo is set to be our biggest yet. Tailored for young people aged 12 and over, along with their parents, families, and whānau, the Expo is a unique opportunity to explore life beyond school.
Come and connect with a wide range of services and opportunities — from disability supports in tertiary education and employment pathways, to transport, libraries, arts, sports, banking, day activities, and social enterprises.
Mark your calendar for 3 September 2025 — it’s a day not to be missed! Click here to find out more.

Meeting with MP’s Highlight Service Gaps
Last Friday, Mike and Board Chair Colleen met with Greg Fleming MP and Joseph Mooney MP, Chair of the Social Services and Community Committee. This committee oversees Ministries such as MSD, Kainga Ora, and Housing and Urban Development.
We raised critical issues where government services are falling short for our community - especially in education, housing, and disability supports. A key concern is the lack of data collection, which leaves our community invisible in policy development and results in inadequate or absent support frameworks.

| Out In The Community |

Spinal Support NZ Gathering – and NZDEN - Sharing Lived Wisdom
Mike attended a recent Spinal Support NZ “Gathering” in Papatoetoe, where people with lived experience of spinal impairments “gather” to share practical tips, equipment advice, and personal stories. The event highlighted the value of peer support in navigating life. Mike encouraged new members to be very real in their Needs Assessments and gained travel tips too— bring a spare cushion cover and clearly labelling cushions ahead of laundry days. It was a warm, insightful gathering that reinforced how sharing knowledge builds resilience and empowers the spinal injury community.
Mike also took a powerful workshop at the New Zealand Disability Employers Network Conference titled “Preparing for First Conversations – Engaging with Tomorrow’s Talent.” He encouraged employers to be courageous, positive, and empathetic—especially when engaging with disabled school leavers and their families. Remembering their own first jobs helps foster meaningful, supportive discussions about a meaningful future.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with employers at our Transition Expo on Wednesday, 3rd September!
