Oct. 1 2019

Greeting

With the African History Month/Season upon us, please find below a selected list of events we're involved in or supporting.

Check them out and support, if you can.

First of all, do look out for the David Foster-helmed TRT World Roundtable current affairs debating programme on Thursday, from 3.30pm. Moi and IDPAD (International Decade For People Of African Descent) Coalition UK co-chair Marlene Ellis will be discussing reparations from the London studio, whilst two Americans, including one who opposes reparations, contribute via video. I'll circulate the Youtube link to the station's nod to the start of African History Season in the next mail out.

Secondly, thanks to all who attended The Environment & Performance Session last Friday. The rain didn't dampen the spirit in Tavistock Hall, where the audience were treated to reggae, including a surprise guest performance, and a couple of the It's Cool To... environment-facing rap songs. BTWSC co-ordinator Awula Serwah led a short discussion on the environment, highlighted her current campaign in Ghana and urged all to sign the Eco-Conscious Citizens' e-petition, which can be found at the bottom of this mail out.

We were blessed to be part of NARM role model Eric Huntley's 90th birthday party, which was a very enjoyable do! The very active nonagenarian and some of his party guests will be leading the More Than Words: 50 Years Of Bogle-L'Ouverture Publishing programmes. Another nonagenarian, Dame Jocelyn Barrow, who was one of the subjects of our 'What They Said I Should Be: The Story Of African British Female Movers & Shakers' DVD, "officially" celebrates her 90th birthday this week. By the standards of the aforementioned, Chrystal Rose, who celebrates her birthday this month amid developing a feature film and finishing off a novel, is a younglin!

BBM/BMC is supporting Nubian Jak, Sarm Studios and Portobello Radio in commemorating the work of The Wailers trio - Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh with the unveiling of a plaque at the site of the former Island Studios in Ladbroke. It's followed by a free club night dedicated to their group and solo output, with the likes of Nzinga Soundz and Joey Jay on the DJ lineup.

We return to the Ladbroke Grove area for TAOBQ: Engaging With IDPAD 2015-24, African Identity & Afriphobia, a vox pops film screening and discussion on the African or Black question, identity, terminology, Afriphobia, and UN's IDPAD (International Decade For People Of Africa Descent) initiative with TAOBQ and IDPAD Coalition UK.

Inspirational speaker and historian Bro Andrew Muhammad returns to invigorate the Harrow African Season 2019: Get Up Stand Up - Raising The New African Consciousness Launch with a presentation especially aimed at young people and their engagement with their African identity. Music4Causes ft Kimba rap about African history, whilst Kwaku focuses on terminology and language. There is a screening Kwaku's 'London African History Through Representations In The Capital' vox pops documentary, which highlights streets, buildings, parks and monuments with an African connection. Kimba repeats his 'Africa: Did You Know?' A Hip-Hop Musical, whilst Nana Asante repeats at a more leisurely pace the 'Highlighting Pioneering Non-Anglo Diasporan And Continental Pan-Africanists' presentation.

If you haven't seen the Ulric Cross biopic 'Hero', we recommend catching a screening during its nation-wide tour. For parents with young ones, PARC's weekend of creative writing and film-making is recommended. If you'd like to know how Black History Month came to the UK and a little-known connection to the borough of Wandsworth, which seems to have now jettisoned Diversity Month in favour of Black History Month, catch my presentation at Battersea Library. We'll also be supporting the Pan African Book Foundation's Celebration Of Africa 2019 in Battersea.

John Fisher and his IDMC soul gospel choir are on a UK-wide tour to mark their 25th anniversary. And lastly, Suffolk African History Collective has a varied programming lasting until December:

1. The Wailers One Love Community Plaque Unveiling & After-Party Club Night (Oct. 4, Ladbroke Grove)

Voluntary organisation BTWSC almost replicated the vibe of this year's IRD (International Reggae Day) event at Tavistock Hall in Harlesden, north-west London, where the audience were treated to lovers rock by Melo D, reggae gospel by Patreecia, and a spirited performance by veteran reggae singer Prince Jahkey of The Royals, who also duetted with Empress I Claire. (Franklyn) Eaton took advantage of the open mic session to perform a spirited rap song, whilst Kimba got the audience going by engaging with a couple Music4Causes It's Cool To... environmental-facing rap songs. Tradition band member Les McNeil did not only talk about a new accredited educational programme he was involved in, but also gave an impromptu rendition of his band's lovers rock classic 'Every Bit Of My Heart'. Tony Washington, who wrote and produced the recently deceased Joy Mac's 'You Had Your Chance' track, wishes to highlight his Lloydie Coxsone-produced 'Tribute To Muhammed Ali' track, which you can hear by clicking here.

The Brent Factor performance of their soon to be released anthem was well received. Shaun Cain's reggae quiz was fun, but not the prizes were given away, simply because people seemed too excited to follow the rules! We thank the Councillors who either passed through or stayed to the very end: James Allie, Krupesh Hirani, Lloyd McNeish and Orleen Hylton. Thanks to the following community radio stations The Beat 103.6FM for running an ad, and Unique, Omega and Flava for highlighting the event in their programmes.

The History of Black History Month in Britain
Wednesday 16 October 6.30-8.00pm
Battersea Library, 265 Lavender Hill, London SW11 1JB. Free. To book please contact the library – 020 7223 2334
Today, Black History Month is well embedded within the British cultural calendar. This audio-visual assisted presentation will provide the story of how it came into being in Britain, with contributions by some of the people who were at the forefront of its introduction. It aims to clarify the purpose of BHM, highlight some of the positive impacts, and pose the question: how do we move forward with Black History Month 32 years on? A little known Wandsworth connection will also be revealed.
Kwaku is an author/editor of a number of books, educator specialising in black music and African British history, editor of BritishBlackMusic.com

'Hero', the Frances-Anne Solomon film inspired by "the extraordinary life of Mr Ulric Cross" begins its UK African History Season nationwide tour with the Pempeople presentation at the Peckhamlex on Oct. 3, and ends with a screening at Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle on Nov. 16. Thanks to an invitation by Tetteh Kofi I was lucky to catch this biopic at a private screening at Yanga TV. This is superb film, which took its director 8 years to complete, cleverly and almost seamlessly mixes archival footage with reconstructed scenes that tell the story of the Trinidadian WWII hero Ulric Cross - much of the story centres not on the war years in which he rose to the dizzy heights of a squadron leader, nor his brief time in London as a BBC talks producer or as his country's high commissioner to the UK, but instead focuses on revealing the lesser known part of his life serving in Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania in various legal capacities. This pan-Africanist aspect makes this the perfect African History Season film! Catch a screening at a cinema near by clicking here.

If one believes in the concept of the global village, then what happens in the environment of one part of the world, has a real possibility of impacting others on the other side of the world. Which is why environment activist and Eco-Conscious Citizens secretary Awula Serwah is appealing to Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians to sign the President Akufo-Addo: Please Keep Ghana's Parks & Gardens Lands For The Green Economy e-petition.

The aim is to stop parts of the Department of Parks And Gardens' land being used to build an office complex. The campaign has thus far highlighted the fact that trees and plants on the land were felled or removed earlier this year, and last month they helped stall a "technical stakeholders meeting" decision, which would have most likely approved the rezoning of the disputed area from a green zone to one that allows the type of concrete development the supervisory ministry is pushing for. So if you believe lands designated for parks and gardens, or the green economy, should remain so, then please click here to show your support by signing the Change.org petition. Pease note that you've not completed the signing process, if you don't receive an auto-acknowledgement.
