Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Come
and Enjoy”
Aim:
Survey the biblical
references to the “second
coming” to
see the importance of this hoped-for reality;
Rejoice
that
the invitation from Jesus to be a part of the new creation continues
through the end of all things;
and Embrace
the call
to become part of God’s kingdom.
Background:
Revelations 22:8-21
Bible
Lesson:
Revelations
22:10-21
“For
I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of
this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto
him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall
take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take
away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and
[from] the things which are written in this book.”
Revelations
22:18-19 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John and Revelations. John was
one of Jesus twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred
to as “the disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross
for the sins of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly
mother” to John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of
disciples, Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount
of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. John penned
Revelations while imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos for his faith.
“Patmos
is now known internationally as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,”
or the “Island of the Apocalypse,” because this is where the
Book of Revelation was written by John, who found refuge on the
island in the 1st century AD.” The Precepts for Living Commentary
introduces this lesson as follows: “The Book of Revelations
records four visions of John. The first vision (1:12-3:22) is of
Jesus and His messages to the seven churches. The second vision
(4:1-13:18) depicts Jesus Christ at the Throne of God, opening the
seven seals. The third vision (14:1-16:21) describes Christ on Mount
Zion.
Our
lesson covers
the
conclusion
of John’s
sharing of
his fourth vision while in the Spirit on the Isle of Patmos. The
focus is on
God’s
invitation for the righteous to enter into the New Jerusalem and to
enjoy all that has been prepared for their benefit.
- Revelations
22:10-11,
Christ
Is Coming Certainly and Quickly:
Because
of the importance of what
was
being given to John in this third vision, the angelic guide
instructed John to not seal the prophetic
words
because
it needed to be heard by all. Those who are doing good must not be
discouraged
but need to continue; however, those who are doing harm and behaving
wickedly need to take notice of
their continued
path which
would
bring about
undesirable
consequences. As stated in last Sunday’s study, Christ Second
Coming is certain and only God the Father knows the day and the
hour. To those who
diligently
and sincerely pursue
righteousness, the
Coming
of
Christ
will be a joyous occasion; however, to
others
His Coming will be a time of sorrow and sadness.
- Revelations
22:12-16,
Christ Is Coming as
King and Lord:
Christ
declares that His Coming will be
swift
and that He will bring just rewards for all people according to
their deeds. There
will be rewards for the wicked as well as for the righteous. The
phrase “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the
Beginning and the End,” denotes that God is the
Ultimate
Source of everything. He states that Happy are those who faithfully
pursue righteousness because they will be granted entrance into the
New Jerusalem and will have the right to partake of the tree of life
or in other words have eternal life. Sorcerers,
whoremongers, murderers, idolaters, those who love lies
and
tell lies, and others
with
wicked behavior
will
be denied entrance into the city prepared for the righteous.
Jesus
declares that He sent His angel to give messages for the churches.
These messages were recorded in Revelations
1:4 – 3:22.
They
address some of the issues prtesent
in the
churches
of the Church Age. Jesus further explains that He is both the source
of King David as well as the heir of David’s throne. Jesus
makes a reference to this mystery when talking with the Pharisees
(Luke
20:41-44). Jesus
refers to Himself as the bright and morning star which identifies
His uniqueness and majestic position
and role. Christ’s position as King and Lord denotes His total
Sovereignty over all of Creation!
-
Revelations
22:17-21,
Christ Is Coming for
the Faithful Who Belong to Him:
The
invitation is
extended by the Spirit of God and by the bride (true believers) to
those who have yet accepted Christ as Savior and Lord and
to
accept
the Gospel. An
acceptance of the invitation will
grant our
entrance
into
the city prepared for the righteous and
it
will
satisfy
our
thirst for righteousness along
with
receiving
the gift of Eternal Life.
This
invitation is freely given. The warning is given to not corrupt or
alter the Gospel as provided by God Himself for the consequences of
doing so will be dire. Such an abomination will result in forfeiting
the opportunity of entrance into
the holy city and partaking of the tree of life and
having
Eternal Life. Jesus affirms His Coming and the swiftness of His
Return. The righteous speak the words “Come Lord, Jesus!” The
passage closes with the benediction
“May
the grace of Our Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people!”
Take
Aways:
- Be
assured
that Jesus is Coming back just as He promised
- We
need to share Jesus’ invitation to Christian Discipleship to those
who are unsaved.
- True
believers in Jesus Christ have a marvelous experience awaiting them
in the New Jerusalem
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“In
my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would
have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto
myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.” John
14:2-3 KJV
“For
the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive [and] remain shall
be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in
the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians
4:16-17 KJV
“For
since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know
God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached
to save those who believe.” 1 Corinthians 1:21 NKJV
“And
Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a
physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance.” Luke
5:31-32 KJV
“For
the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.” Matthew
18:11 KJV
