The 18th Mount Holyoke European Alum Symposium invites the Mount Holyoke community to explore how the threads of history continue to shape the bodies we live in, the environments we inhabit, and the communities we build. Together, we will consider how reworking these threads can inspire reflection, creativity, and transformation - turning what we inherit into the fabric of a more promising future.
Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh, a UNESCO world heritage site and a city renowned for its layered history and numerous innovations, such as anesthetics, modern economics, and Fleabag, the symposium calls on us to reimagine the institutions and systems that shape our world. Thought-provoking discussions will span a breadth of topics, from exploring how we can rethink the portrayal of women in popular culture to the mixed impacts of cloning and its future application. Through cross-disciplinary dialogue with Mount Holyoke professors, alums and guests representing the sciences, humanities and the arts, participants will weave together threads from the past and present to help us begin to design a better tomorrow.
Additionally, the symposium will offer participants many opportunities to explore the unique culture, locations and traditions of Scotland; providing a perfect blend of fun and intellectual stimulation!
