Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month, and while there is no shortage of women who have served San Francisco well, here at NEXT Village, there are a number of amazing women who also deserve to be honored. We’ll focus on a few of them during our Spring Fling fundraiser on March 20th, but in the meantime, please take a bow, Sharone Mendes-Nassi and Trish Herman.
Sharone came to us several months ago with a plan to help Pat’s Café and our members at the same time. Sharone & North Beach Neighbors raised funds to provide lunches for 34 members every Friday for six weeks. Following that, she raised funds to provide Valentine’s treats for 100 of our members. Between the crew of teenagers that collected and assembled the goodie bags, volunteer drivers, and her trusty sidekick, Trish, they surprised and delighted our members. It has been truly remarkable and moving to be a part of their energy and thoughtfulness. So, thank you Sharone and Trish. History will look favorably upon you for your good deeds.

A huge thank you to our community partners that helped make Valentine's Day special this year!

Russian Hill Neighbors, Junior League of SF, and Laura Vicuna Pre-School all wrote beautiful cards for members.
St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference at St. Peter and Paul Church donated 35 lunches from Pat's Cafe for our members!

NEXT Village has Got Talent!
NEXT Village members and friends showed off their talents and brought smiles to many faces this month with a Valentine's Card & Gift Making Zoom on Feb. 3, and a Variety Show on Feb 12.
Special thanks to Linda Coughenour and Elizabeth Ruemelin for showing us how to make beautiful paper flowers and a heart shaped wreath, and to Janet Crane for sharing the history of Valentine Cards and her hand made cards.
A well deserved round of applause is due to the Stars of our Variety Show: Barbara Patinkin, Catherine Hampton, John Nockels, Juanita Rusev, Kathleen Stefano, Louise Vogel, and Sandra Seidita of the NEXT Village Improv Group and the Aquatic Park Players. With Louise Vogel directing the show, we were entertained with songs, poems, skits, sock puppet Romeo & Juliet and even an interview with Cupid!
Share your talent with us on St. Patty's Day!! Since our performers and audience had so much fun, we'll have another Variety Show on March 17th at 4 PM. Whether you sing, dance, tell jokes, juggle, play fiddle, read poems or something else, we invite you to be a part of the next show! Email donna [at] nextvillagesf.org to "audition" for our St. Patrick's Day show if you want to have your 2 minutes of fame on our Zoom stage!

Meet Kate & Rita!
Kate is a fantastic volunteer that has been helping NEXT Village member Rita get her groceries for the last few months!
Kate said, "I am thankful to be able to volunteer with NEXT Village. I began grocery shopping for Rita not long after "shelter in place" was issued and I hope after this pandemic I would get to spend more time with her. Rita is such a delight! She loves to cook, draw, and sew new outfits for her stuffed animals. Being able to connect with someone new in my community during a time like this brings light to my life."
Rita said, "Kate is so nice - one of your best volunteers! Kate does my shopping perfectly: She comes in under budget, never forgets anything, and she arranges everything perfectly in the bag so nothing gets squashed. This is the third time she brought me flowers. She brought some for my birthday, Christmas, and now Valentine's Day. Getting the groceries I need is essential, but having the volunteers be so nice as well is wonderful."

Meet Veronica & Richard!
Veronica is an outstanding NEXT Village volunteer that has been helping members grocery shop throughout the pandemic! In the picture to the right, Veronica is dropping off groceries for Richard, a neighbor she's been helping for the last few months.
When asked why she decided to volunteer for NEXT Village, Veronica said: "North Beach has been my home for nearly 20 years and I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet and help some of my neighbors!"
If you’re interested in volunteering, or would like great volunteers like Veronica and Kate to assist you, please contact Rachel: rachel@nextvillagesf.org, 415-574-0156

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES SERIES: WORKING IN AFGHANISTAN IN 2008-2009 TO DEVELOP THE RULE OF LAW |
|
Why, you ask, would someone endure the danger of war and leave behind the comforts of a San Francisco home to work in Afghanistan? Mary Noel Pepys, an international attorney, will share her experiences helping to develop the rule of law in Afghanistan from 2008-2009 and the extraordinary opportunity she had to support the Afghan legal community in enhancing the criminal justice and corrections systems. She’ll take you on a unique journey of an international attorney working in Afghanistan during the war. She concluded her work with the belief that while the road to justice and equality is, indeed, long, Afghans are no different from American citizens. They dream of a better future for themselves, their children and their country.

ARMCHAIR TRAVEL: MAKING ART AND BREAD IN FRANCE PROFONDE |
|
Judy O’Shea is an installation artist based on Telegraph Hill and Inverness who has built successful careers in both the corporate and art worlds. For anyone who has dreamed of living overseas, join us for Judy's amazing story and photos of her experience meeting, befriending, and finally becoming part of the community in a rural area of France where Roquefort sheep outnumber humans ten to one. She’ll tell us about the restoration of a ruin of a mill, learning French on the fly, and the ridiculous situations that occur in a foreign culture. She started out looking for cultural differences and was surprised by her final conclusions, which she’ll share! O’Shea’s large-scale installation art has been shown in both France and the U.S., most recently at the Sonoma Valley Museum.

Did you receive an Economic Impact Payment card in the mail?
While most people will get a direct deposit for the most recent round of COVID-19 relief payments, you may get a debit card in the mail instead. This money can be used as a debit card, or you can transfer it into your bank account. These EIP cards are sponsored by the Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, managed by Money Network Financial, LLC and issued by Treasury’s financial agent, MetaBank®
**You will need to call to activate the debit card once you receive it.
The EIP Cards are sent in a plain white envelope which prominently displays the U.S. Treasury seal and “Economic Impact Payment Card” in the return address. The envelope will also have the following notation: “Not a bill or an advertisement. Important information about your Economic Impact Payment.”
The Visa name is on the front of the Card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Information included with the card will explain that this is your Economic Impact Payment. If you receive an Economic Impact Payment Card, visit EIPcard.com for more information. You can also find more information and FAQ’s on the IRS website.
