A Significant Step Forward

Dear St. Andrew’s Congregation,

I was in a meeting yesterday of the Health Advisory Task Force.  Our topic was assessing when St. Andrew’s might possibly be ready to try in-person worship, given the recent reclassification of our county COVID status from purple to red.  (Indoor worship is permitted, as long as the many protocols are followed).  We ended up coming to consensus and will make our recommendation to session October 20; the session’s decision will be shared with you after that.  After we signed off on Zoom, I sensed something important had occurred.  St. Andrew’s pastor-elect, Rev. Jen Fraser, had joined us in our deliberations from Arizona –the first time she was participating in a committee meeting.  I believe all of us present would agree how valuable it was to have Jen in the group.  Her leadership, insights, wisdom, experience and collaborative style were tangibly present.  The meeting demonstrated that her positive impact is already present, here and now.

So, the leadership transition has actively and effectively begun.  Jen will be part of a worship committee meeting next week and the session the following week.  It is exciting.

Other activities and projects continue.  This coming Sunday, I’ll be offering the last in the “Glimpses of Paradise” series.  We’ll look at two passages from the book of Revelation and see how the spiritual imagination can, indeed, provide us with compelling glimpses of the divine reality.

This week's lead photograph is a current picture of the St. Andrew's bulletin board in Morgan Hall.  Even though we are not gathering in person in the fellowship hall, Caroline Willsie once again created this wonderful display.  The photo reminds us that we can still contribute to the PC(USA) denominational offering PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS.  Contributions can be made online or forwarded to the church office (simply mark you contribution "Peacemaking").

Adult Education continues this Sunday with the Faith and Reason Series, “Does Christianity Have a Future?”  Experience renowned theologians Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and Joan Chittister together live on stage exploring topics of faith and life with honesty, integrity, and expertise.  We can look forward to serious and useful examination about whether Christianity has a future or not.  This FAITHANDREASON seminar was held at Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral, Houston, TX, October 18 & 19, 2013.  Please join us this Sunday on Zoom after Coffee Hour for Marcus Borg's presentation Progressive Christianity and the Christian Future."   Subsequent lectures will be presented weekly.

John Dominic Crossan – Why I Am Still a Christian
