Get your family actually speaking Spanish (or the language of your choice -- 10+ languages available)
Ok, so if you're anything like me, your dreams of easily raising bilingual children felt dashed the minute preschool started and they started demanding you "say it in English!"
All hope is not lost over here because I'll likely enroll the kiddos in dual immersion elementary school, BUT I was starting to worry about that early resistance to Spanish. I wanted to turn things around in some way that felt manageable and not overwhelming.
What I'm loving about TalkBox.Mom (coupon: REF6HVEQKZJUJ) is that it's focused on getting families speaking in their language of choice. It accomplishes this with a very thoughtful, structured, and bite-sized approach that is very easy to implement:
- Choose ONLY 1-5 phrases
- Repeat the phrases (native speaker audio included in an app -- which my kiddo likes)
- Practice the phrases (games / activities / role plays)
- Use the phrases in daily life
- Choose new phrases & rinse and repeat
It's a subscription program, so you get one themed box with phrases and materials, and each box builds off of the last one.
The real test? What does the 5 year old say?
Well after introducing and practicing phrases from Box 1 Snacks & Kitchen, he says things like:
- "tengo MUCHA hambre" (I'm VERY hungry)
- "quiero agua / manzana / caqui (lol), por favor" (I want water / apple / persimmon, please)
- and he recently added into the mix: "pon el plato in the fregadero" (put your plate in the sink)
So I'm calling that a win! I know this might not seem like a lot, but he's less resistant and actually showing interest in repeating the phrases after listening to them in the app (as opposed to having to listen to and repeat Mami -- insert eyeroll).
What I've realized is that by speaking Spanish randomly all the time I was teaching him to understand Spanish, but not really offering opportunities for him to speak it and feel successful.
This added structure (1-5 phrases at a time), plus some fun games included in the box, has allowed us to chip away at the resistance and have fun learning -- and actually speaking -- together.
That was my looooong way of saying that if you'd like to get your family speaking (and thereby learning) a foreign language, this program might be exactly what you need.
It's a little pricey, but it's very easy to pause your subscription and/or pace the boxes a few months apart to make it more cost effective.
I also recommend getting the phrase book (for additional phrases and audio), and the planner which helps you keep track of chosen phrases, keeps you accountable, and makes you really stick to just 1-5 phrases at a time.
