Aidan Marlowe is the superstitious type—he's been playing the same lottery numbers for fifteen years, never hitting the jackpot. Until now. On the day of his wife's funeral.

But the money gives him and his kids options they didn't have before. They can leave everything behind. They can start a new life in a new town. So they do.
But a huge new house and all the money in the world can't replace what they've lost, and it's not long before Aidan realizes he's merely trading old demons for new ones. 4/5/22 - William Morrow - $16.99
The New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Never Have I Ever returns with an even more addictive novel of domestic suspense in which a mother must decide how far she is willing to go to protect her child and the life she loves—an unforgettable tale of power, privilege, lies, revenge, and the choices we make, ones that transform our lives in unforeseen ways.
Revenge doesn’t wait for permission.
Growing up poor in rural Georgia, Bree Cabbat was warned that the world was a dark and scary place. Bree rejected that fearful outlook, and life has proved her right. Having married into a family with wealth, power, and connections, Bree now has all a woman could ever dream of.
Until the day she awakens and sees someone peering into her bedroom window—an old gray-haired woman dressed all in black who vanishes as quickly as she appears. It must be a play of the early morning light or the remnant of a waking dream, Bree tells herself, shaking off the bad feeling that overcomes her.
Later that day though, she spies the old woman again, in the parking lot of her daughters’ private school . . . just minutes before Bree’s infant son, asleep in his car seat only a few feet away, vanishes. It happened so quickly—Bree looked away only for a second. There is a note left in his place, warning her that she is being watched; if she wants her baby back, she must not call the police or deviate in any way from the instructions that will follow.
The mysterious woman makes contact, and Bree learns she, too, is a mother. Why would another mother do this? What does she want? And why has she targeted Bree? Of course Bree will pay anything, do anything. It’s her child.
To get her baby back, Bree must complete one small—but critical—task. It seems harmless enough, but her action comes with a devastating price.
Bree will do whatever it takes to protect her family—but what if the cost tears their world apart?

4/12/22 - Little, Brown and Company - $29.00
The bestselling, beloved writer of romantic comedies like You've Got Mail tells her own late-in-life love story, complete with a tragic second act and joyous resolution.
Delia Ephron had struggled through several years of heartbreak. She’d lost her sister, Nora, and then her husband, Jerry, both to cancer. Several months after Jerry’s death, she decided to make one small change in her life—she shut down his landline, which crashed her internet. She ended up in Verizon hell. She channeled her grief the best way she knew: by writing a New York Times op-ed. The piece caught the attention of Peter, a Bay Area psychiatrist, who emailed her to commiserate. Recently widowed himself, he reminded her that they had shared a few dates fifty-four years before, set up by Nora. Delia did not remember him, but after several weeks of exchanging emails and sixties folk songs, he flew east to see her. They were crazy, utterly, in love. But this was not a rom-com: four months later she was diagnosed with AML, a fierce leukemia. In Left on Tenth, Delia Ephron enchants as she seesaws us between tears and laughter, navigating the suicidal lows of enduring cutting-edge treatment and the giddy highs of a second chance at love. With Peter and her close girlfriends by her side, with startling clarity, warmth, and honesty about facing death, Ephron invites us to join her team of warriors and become believers ourselves.

4/12/22 - William Morrow - $28.99
Celebrated actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton updates his memoir of collected blog posts with all new material and annotations as he reexamines one of the most interesting lives in Hollywood and fandom—and now for the first time in audio, narrated by Wil himself!
From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself, in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture.
Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didn’t expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies.
Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and now has an enormous following on social media with well over 3 million followers.
In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career. From his times on the Enterprise to his struggles with depression to his starting a family and finding his passion—writing—Wil Wheaton is someone whose life is both a cautionary tale and a story of finding one’s true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

The Lying Club by Annie Ward
There was definitely a lot of lying going on in this book, but I am not sure any of the characters liked or trusted anyone else to really have formed a club. I really didnt like any of the characters at first. There were spoiled rich kids who got into the kind of trouble you would expect rich teens to get into but as you read you may wonder if they are really all bad kids or if it is just one or two of them. Spoiled rich parents who are used to getting their way are another group of unlikeable characters. Then there were Natalie, a young administrative assistant, and Nick, a much beloved and caring soccer coach whose main goal was to help the kids achieve success and get into prestigious schools I wanted to like them, especially Natalie, but because of unresolved trust issues from her past she just kept doing such stupid things. The book opens with police from the major crimes unit interrogating Natalie about something horrible that happened in the gym. The story then slowly goes back and forth from what lead up to the incident in the gym to what happened afterwards. Even when I thought I knew what happened I got surprised. Great lessons for teens and parents of teens and the fact that money cannot keep your kids safe that is a parents job.

Blood Sugar by Sascha Rothchild

Ruby is a licensed therapist, so she understands and rationalizes that while she has killed three people, she is not a sociopath. She is a kind and loving and empathetic human being. Perhaps because she is such a kind and caring person, she has convinced herself that she has done nothing wrong because the three people she killed were truly vile and evil. But she is now suspected of killing her husband a person she loved and who was a kind and caring person. I loved every minute of this cleverly written book. The story is told from Rubys point of view and the author does an incredible job making her a really likeable character despite the fact she freely admits (to herself) that she is a murderer.

Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough
Emma Averill is a highly successful divorce lawyer with two children and a husband who seems to adore her. As she approaches her 40th birthday the same age her mother was when she seemingly suddenly lost her mind Emma starts experiencing severe insomnia and eventually starts doubting her own sanity. As Emmas past is revealed you will also begin to wonder if she is insane, paranoid or if someone is really trying to harm her. Afterall, just because you are paranoid doesnt mean something bad isnt going to happen. Sarah Pinborough once again uses her writing skills to produce a mind-blowing novel with an ending that rivals that of Behind Her Eyes.

The Family Plot by Megan Collins
The Lighthouse family is obsessed with true crime. The four children are named for famous victims of true crime. They are home schooled using the stories of crime victims as their textbooks. They hold ceremonies on the anniversary of victims deaths to honor their names. They live in an old ancestral home, known by locals as the murder mansion, on an island accessible only by Ferry. An island known as the home of the Blackburn killings because 7 murder victims have washed up on its shores. Daniel Lighthouse, the family patriarch, dies and the body of his youngest son Andy who was thought to have run away 10 years earlier - is found in his grave. Thus begins one of the creepiest and macabre stories of family and loyalty and evil and sickness that I have ever read.

When She Was Good by Michael Robotham
When She Was Good is the second book in the Cyrus Haven series. While enough background is given for you to figure out who Cyrus and Evie are and what their relationship is to each other you will be really missing out if you dont read Good Girl, Bad Girl first. This is a psychological thriller about a psychologist who had a very traumatic childhood and a young girl with a very traumatic but mysterious past. In the first book Cyrus was hired by the police to try and find out about her past and the two bonded in such a way that you have to read the book to understand their complex relationship of love and hate. This story starts with Evie, once again getting into trouble at the care home she has been remanded to until she turns 18. Cyrus, as a police consultant, becomes involved in the death of a retired detective who at first was thought to have committed suicide. Cyrus immediately realizes that it was murder but more importantly he sees notes that the detective was working on and they have a mention of Angel Face who Cyrus, but no one else, knows is now Evie. When She Was Good is told alternately in first person from Cyrus and Evies point of view. Both of them also let us know more about their past which makes you care even more about what happens to both of them. Robotham has done an extraordinary job of character development. In making Cyrus and Evie care so much about each other he has made us like them both as well. And makes me, for one, want to know what happens to both of them next.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
What an absolutely charming book! Elizabeth Zott is not your typical woman living in the 1960s. She is a chemist determined to prove that she is as good as any man in her field, which is not so easy to do with so many of the preconceived ideas of what a woman should and should not do at this time. I love her hilarious and straight to the point comebacks to many of the men who try to tell her she can not do something because it isnt seemly for a woman to do. You will be infuriated by how she is treated and be thankful that women are not still treated that way (most of the time). You will love her delightful child Mad, and Six-thirty who is the best dog anyone could ever own, and you may also learn a little chemistry along the way.

When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain
When the Stars Go Dark is a mystery concerning the disappearance of a teen aged girl. It takes place in CA in 1993 at the same time Polly Klass is kidnapped and many of the details of that case are brought out in the story of the disappearance of Cameron. The novel is, however, much more than a mystery. It is really the story of the detective in the case Anna Hart and of her traumatic childhood and the tragedy she has just been through. In the Authors note at the end of the book McClain explains that Annas story and Camerons story are very much her story. She once again has crafted a lyrical and deeply emotional story based on history her history as well as the history of what happens in a community when one of its own is taken.

Northern Spy by Flynn Berry
As a single mom the most important thing in Tessas life is her infant son, Finn. She would do anything to protect him. But she never dreamed that protecting him and ensuring him a peaceful future would mean she has to make choices she never would have even thought about making before he was born. The second most important thing in Tessas life is her sister Marion. A sister who as herself had been born right after the troubles in Northern Ireland but who was not political at all. She was a paramedic and like Tessa just tried to be safe when the occasional IRA activities became more prevalent. Only, as it turns, out Marion is not apolitical she is seen on camera during a robbery with known IRA members. Soon everything changes and Tessa is drawn into a life of danger that she never dreamed possible. A Northern Spy is not your ordinary spy thriller. It is full of the typical secret meetings, double agents, foiled plots, and just trying to stay alive but it is also a study of a mothers devotion and a rationale for the choices that she makes when she essentially decides she has no choice but to become a spy.

What Comes After by JoAnne Tompkins
Evangeline, a pregnant teenaged girl who has been totally abandoned and whose only wish is to have a loving mother and a normal family suddenly appears in a small town that is reeling over the deaths of two teenaged boys who had been lifelong friends. There is much sadness and much soul searching by those who have been left behind, and Evangeline seems to be just what they need to start to heal. But there is too much blame and too much self-blame and too much hatred for this process to be easy. Evangeline and her baby can bring hope for the future but only after the lies stop and forgiveness begins can this happen. I dont think I have ever read a book so beautifully written and so heart wrenching and yet positive at the same time. It presents an interesting and introspective look at the Quaker religion while it teaches us about hope, healing and courage.

I love the faster pacing of books written for a younger audience (middle grade and young adult), but will try just about anything fiction, especially if it has some romance. I also have a soft spot for really special picture books.

The Words We Keep by Erin Stewart
Lily has been struggling since she found her sister Alice on the bathroom floor with a razor blade a couple of months ago. Actually, she's been struggling since before then, but with Alice gone, and then when Alice comes back but not herself, Lily struggles more than ever with the need to be perfect, to prop up her family and her friends, to not let everyone know about the monsters inside that tell her she's not good enough. Micah, a boy who was in the treatment center with Alice and has demons of his own, is the only one who seems to see Lily at all, but is it enough for him to stay when her monsters tell her she's letting him and everyone else down? A heartfelt look at mental illness, at how it affects individuals and the people close to them, about the work that goes into overcoming the challenges it brings. You will likely cry, but for readers who may see themselves in Lily's anxiety or Alice's bipolar or Micah's depression, perhaps it could be life-saving.

The Unwilling by John Hart
One of Gibby's older brothers died in Vietnam, and the other, Jason, came back changed for the worse, though he won't talk about what happened. When Jason is accused of murder, Gibby seems to be the only one convinced he didn't do it and sets out to prove to himself one way or the other. Take My Hand is a beautiful novel that tackles an unpleasant subjectthe forced sterilizations of African American girls in the early 1970s. Unable to bear the harm done to her young patients, Civil takes action in a way that may jeopardize her most trusted relationships.

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases by Paul Holes
I don't read a lot of 'true crime,' and I honestly struggled with this one until I realized that it had completely captured my attention and I was unable to put it down. Paul Holes has lived a life unimaginable to most of us; facing the depths of depravity and the lengths of evil that exist in this world over the course of his lifetime. Clearly it has affected him...he paints himself as a rather unlikable character, single-mindedly focused on his work at the expense of his relationships, his marriage and his family. Imagine obsessing over one single thing (in his case capturing the Golden State Killer) every day of your life for over two decades. It is no wonder his personal life suffered as a result, but so deep was his obsession with this particular cold case, even his professional life was negatively impacted. I almost wonder if he isn't affected by Autism or some other syndrome that drove his compulsion to pursue this predator for most of his career. This is a fascinating read not just in the steps it takes to catch a killer, but in how it can affect the lives of so many different people in so many different ways. It is disturbing, but compelling and even if it isn't something you would normally pick up, it was an amazing read.
