On August 16, 2024, the Department of Energy (DOE), Grid Deployment Office announced awards for the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant Program for fiscal years (FY) 2022 through 2024. Authorized by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants program is designed to strengthen and modernize America’s power grid against wildfires, extreme weather, and other natural disasters that are exacerbated by the climate crisis. The Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grant Program distributes funding to federally recognized Tribal Nations, states, and territories over a five-year period based on a formula that includes factors such as population size, land area, probability and severity of disruptive events, and a locality’s historical expenditures on mitigation efforts. Tribal Nations, as well as Alaska Native Regional Corporations and Alaska Native Village Corporations, use these funds for a diverse set of projects with priority given to efforts that generate the greatest community benefit providing clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
The total funding awarded for FY 2024 was $281,736,198 with 173 Tribal Nations, 26 states, and 3 territories receiving funds from the program.
