Changing of the Guard

Walking into the city of Perth 2014 was the beginning of a life changing event. Noticing the increase of many sitting on the crossover from the Art Gallery begging and sitting with them to get a little insight into the lives of those doing it real tough and experiencing homelessness. It was then I decided to do something to make a small change and from there Perth Homeless Support Group was inspired.

Over the past 6 years the not-for-profit charity has been major part in offering support and comfort to over 11,000 with food, blankets, sleeping bags and now into the part of hampers to those in the risk of homelessness.

I have held the position of President for all of that time and very much loved the opportunity to work alongside of some like-minded and amazing people.

Aaron McGregor and his wife become involved in the volunteering roles and I quickly saw the passion and drive they both had. We have just had our 7th AGM and it was a privilege to be able to nominate Aaron for the position of President which he accepted.

I will be still actively involved in the position of Vice President and with my spouse Michael Edwards will now be able to move into the area of being a more active voice for our street friends.

We would like to congratulate Aaron McGregor on taking on this role.

Volunteer and Depot Update

On Sunday the 14th of June we stopped our roving outreach and with easing or restrictions we were able to resume our outreach at the Moore street homeless hub in east Perth.

It feels so good to be back at full scale and being able to offer our full service to those experiencing homelessness, this included non perishable food, fresh food, water, juice, tea and coffee, toiletries, clothing, shoes and blankets. We also have the shower bus back with us, the footpath library and we are excited to welcome a new hairdresser on board.

We have also now welcomed volunteers back to our depot with Wednesday busy bees now resuming every Wednesday from 10am and we also now have a sandwich making busy bee held each Friday from 10.30am.

And during the school holidays we are excited to be able to welcome children back to our depot for special kids busy bees where children can participate by making up special care packs that will be handed out to those experiencing homelessness at our Sunday outreach.

This year Perth Homeless Support Group started a new hamper service offering much needed items to those within our community considered to be at risk, we have been averaging about 8 hampers a week with most of them going to crisis accommodation and people recently off the streets or out of prison.

As restrictions are currently being eased we are excited to be able to hold events again and have some exciting ones coming up at our depot including a books sale and sausage sizzle on the 4th of July and an open day in October.

Please keep an eye on our social media and website for all these exciting upcoming events.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued support of Perth homeless support group and for the donations that have been coming in constantly for the last few weeks, this really has made a difference and has helped immensely being able to provide support and care items to those experiencing homelessness.

Also just a reminder that the only items of clothing we are accepting at our depot are warm jumpers and jackets, scarves and beanies, all other items can be directed to our clothing coordinator Lisa Boogaard.

We also do not accept pillows, cushions, kitchen utensils or furniture. A full list of items we do accept can be found on the website and social media pages.

We hope you continue to stay safe and we look forward to seeing you at our many volunteer opportunities or upcoming events.

We feel it is important that you get to know the committee behind the important work done by Perth Homeless Support Group and its amazing volunteers.

So without further ado, we present PHSG co-founder, past President and current Vice President Mr Ron Reid.

Ron Reid - Vice President

Six years ago, I developed a strategy to start a group on social media to highlight the plight I saw in the homeless sector. From that I established the Perth Homeless Support Group Inc which is now a powerful group making a real difference to those experiencing homelessness in the City of Perth.

It was a great honour and also humbling to be nominated for Australian of the Year in the category of “Local Hero”. I am also a Hair and Beauty Professional, trainer, and business owner, having worked in this industry for over 47 years in partnership with my husband Michael.

The people who inspire me most are those who are honest and integral. Some highlights in my life include the law reforms that allowed me to be married to my partner of 20 years. I have a degree in Theology and love undertaking research in a number of often strange and bizarre topics. I also love to cook, appreciate a really good kitchen and am a complete OCD clean freak!
