Vol. 12, September 2023

The fall study abroad semester began last month with the HUE program, but in September, the Greece and Australasia programs finally joined in on the fun. All three programs have already visited several fantastic locations and we can't wait to show you further down in this newsletter. Additionally, we've included a new HULA video showcasing Arequipa and the Colca Canyon that was released earlier this month. Last but certainly not least, please make plans to join us at Homecoming where we will celebrate four decades of studying abroad. For more information on these updates, please continue reading.

HUE

Harding University in Europe

HUE began the month in England where they spent the first two weeks sightseeing in London and the surrounding areas. Then, they made brief visits to the Netherlands and Germany before embarking on an 11-day cruise. Along the way, they visited several places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz and Alicante in Spain, Palma de Mallorca, and Marseilles in France before finally arriving in Italy. The HUE group closed out the month by living like a HUF student at the Florence villa, complete with visits to many of HUF's favorite sites.

HUG

Harding University in Greece

On September 7th, the HUG group arrived in Greece. During the first three weeks, they explored the museums and landmarks of Athens and embarked on their first group excursion, a tour of Northern Greece. This trip included visits to Delphi, Meteora, Thessaloniki, Philippi, and Mount Olympus. In their downtime, the group has enjoyed learning how to make Greek coffee, playing pickleball, volunteering at a soup kitchen in Athens and more!

HUA

Harding University in Australasia

The HUA group made their way to Sydney on September 11th and dedicated the first two weeks of the semester to exploring the beautiful country of Australia. During their visit, they had the opportunity to tour the iconic Sydney Opera House, take a leisurely cruise along Sydney Harbor, visit a butterfly sanctuary, an Aboriginal center, and even had a chance to go snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. On September 26th, they boarded a plane heading to Queenstown, New Zealand, where they will be staying for the next six weeks.

New HULA Video featuring Arequipa & the Colca Canyon

Travel is an opportunity. God’s world is complex, diverse, and beautiful, and study abroad is an invitation to enter into that world and ask big questions about what it means to be alive. With International Programs at Harding University, we travel as learners, which means listening and learning from people who are different than you are—and having a lot of fun along the way.

A big thanks to Mark Slagle of 1504 for creating this video that captures some of HULA’s time in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon.

Homecoming Art Show and Fundraiser

Join us in celebrating more than 40 years of studying abroad at Harding University during the Homecoming weekend! We are excited to reconnect with alumni and friends, as well as plan for the next generation. As a part of the homecoming festivities, there will be an art show featuring artwork donated by HUF director Robbie Shackelford and other friends and alumni. The proceeds from this event will fund scholarships for future students to study abroad. The art show will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 7-9 pm in the Sears Honors House. We, along with Robbie & Mona Shackelford and Silvia from HUF, are eagerly looking forward to catching up with you during the Homecoming weekend on November 2-4! See you then!

Our Office Has Moved

In mid-August, our office moved from its previous location in the Sears Honors House to the brand new Holland-Waller building between the Anthony and Wright Administration Building and Pattie Cobb Hall, where the Ganus building was located. We are in suite 104, the Swaid Institute for International Education.

Please stop by and see us sometime! Our office is open from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Our phone number remains the same, 501-279-4529.
