Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Nature of Christian Freedom”
Aim: Discern the
differences between legalism
and freedom that comes with responsibility;
Experience
freedom as trusting in the work of Christ rather than our own efforts
for salvation, and Choose
a life of freedom in Christ that is guided by serving and loving
others with humility.
Background:
Galatians 5:1-15
Bible Lesson:
Galatians
5:1-15
“For
all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself.” Galatians 5:14 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
We continue our Study for this
week from Apostle Paul’s Epistle or Letter to the believers in the
Roman province of Galatia. This area is believed to be modern day
southern Turkey. This letter is written to correct a false “gospel”
proclaimed by a group of
Jewish Christians called
Judaizers, who believed that non-Jews had to be circumcised and
conform to all of the Mosaic
laws to become Christians and refuted Paul’s teaching of the true
Gospel which was based upon faith in and a relationship with Jesus
Christ. The focus of our study is in Chapter 5, where Paul addresses
“True Faith.” He wants his readers to be clear that salvation is
based upon faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and does not
require one to adopt the Jewish laws and requirements
that had been established for the Jewish nation. The believers in
Galatia were Gentiles and the Judaizers were pressing hard upon them
to add to their faith the adherence of all of the many Jewish laws,
customs, and rituals for salvation. Paul’s
objective was to bring the Galatian believers on course with his
original teaching that faith in Jesus Christ was all that was needed
for salvation.
-
Galatians
5:1-6, Be Not Entangled: Paul
emphatically informs his readers that if one has faith in Jesus
Christ as lord and savior then they are truly free. There are no
legalistic strings attached to this freedom as some false teachers
were claiming. If one relies on following the law for salvation, one
is again becoming a slave to the law that
was humanly impossible to keep.
If one counts on circumcision to bring about a right relationship
with God, then one is not relying upon faith in Jesus Christ which
is the only way to have a right relationship with God. If one seeks
favor with God through fulfillment
of the law, where
circumcision represents reliance on the law, one must obey every
regulation of the law without exception, which as
stated earlier is humanly
impossible. Taking the legalistic path to establish
a right relationship with
God rather than faith in the works of Jesus Christ will lead to
failure. On the contrary, those who live by the Spirit or in other
words, by faith in Jesus Christ anxiously await the promised
righteousness promised by God. Once one places his/her faith in
Jesus Christ, being
circumcised or uncircumcised
has no impact upon their relationship with God. What does matter is
the expression of love to others which
springs
from a faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to
live a life pleasing to God. Rather
than fulfilling the law to gain favor with God, believer’s find
themselves fulfilling the law as they seek to please God by allowing
the Holy Spirit to guide them daily.
-
Galatians
5:7-12, Stay on the Right Course: Paul
compares living a Christian
life to running a race. To be successful in a race, one must
persevere in spite of obstacles. He states that God is not working
against Himself for He provides
the Grace in which the readers are living within. Paul then moves
to a culinary example. A small amount of leaven or yeast can be
placed in dough and have a
big impact in causing the dough to rise. A little false teaching
spread within the Christian
community can
lead a large number of believers astray if not corrected
immediately. Paul states that he
is relying on God to keep
the Christians in Galatia from believing and accepting any false
teaching and that God, the righteous one, will judge those who
were spreading and
promoting false teachings. It is implied that some of the false
teachers were claiming that Paul was in agreement with their
teaching. Paul strongly denies his agreement and asks his readers to
just observe how he is being persecuted for his preaching. They
should conclude for
themselves that if he
were in agreement with the need
for circumcision and adherence
to other legalistic
requirements, then
he would not be
undergoing such persecution. He made it clear that he was preaching
salvation based upon
the cross of Christ and that caused
his persecution. Paul makes a harsh statement that he wishes that
the false
teachers
were not just
circumcised
but
castrated, which would disqualify them from even worshipping in the
synagogue. Essentially, he
wished that the false
teachers were removed from their opportunity to mislead others.
-
Galatians
5:13-15, Call to Be Free: Paul
warns the believers at Galatia that their freedom in Christ was not
a license to satisfy their sinful nature or desires. Instead their
freedom is to be used to serve others in love. He used Jesus’
words that the whole law was summed up in the one command, “Love
your neighbor as yourself.” Paul further warned that harsh
treatment, hurtful words and deeds destroy the spirit of others and
the unity which should exist within the body of believers in
Christ.
Take
Aways:
-
Do
not become trapped into believing that our salvation is dependent
upon anything besides a genuine faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior. Because of our faith and love for Jesus Christ, we strive to
live in a way that will please Him and quickly
seek
forgiveness when we sin.
-
Recognize
that responsibility comes with our spiritual freedom through Jesus
Christ. We are ambassadors for Christ and our lives maybe the only
“Bible” that
a non-believer will see.
-
As
Christians, our lives should be filled with service and acts of love
toward others, especially to
those of the household of faith.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves; [it is] the gift of God,” Ephesians
2:8 NKJV
“Jesus
answered him, "The first of all the commandments [is]: 'Hear, O
Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. 'And you shall love the
LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your
mind, and with all your strength.' This [is] the first commandment.
"And the second, like [it, is] this: 'You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than
these."” Mark 12:29-31 NKJV
“Then
Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My
word, you are My disciples indeed. "And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free."” John 8:31-32 NKJV
“Therefore
if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:36
NKJV
“Therefore,
my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the
work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the
Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV
“So
Samuel said: "Has the LORD [as great] delight in burnt offerings
and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey
is better than sacrifice, [And] to heed than the fat of rams.” 1
Samuel 15:22 NKJV
