A late-summer rain perfumes the Provencal air with a heady combination of sweet fig, musty cedar, and fennel flower. Although it's probably not a perfume fragrance that would sell, it might make a lovely, scented candle.
Early September often means the grape harvest is underway (or finished). If you see groups picking olives at this time of year, they are harvesting for olive cassées, not oil. School bells and construction noise replace the cicada's summer symphony as everyone has returned from holidays. Azure September skies and lovely daytime temperatures bring the return of bike tour groups to the roads.
Here are a few things to do this September:
Visit Mathieu Lustrerie in Gargas before September 22nd (by appointment) to see the restoration work on the Notre Dame de Paris chandeliers.
Don’t miss this deal! Spend 3 glorious nights in a luxury B&B in the heart of a Rhône Valley vineyard. Immerse yourself in the aromas of ripe fruit during pre- or post-harvest. La Verrière is offering 3 nights for the price of 2, and the nightly rate is from 200 Euros. Available until the end of October. Book now by emailing reservations@laverriere.com CODE: 342.
The Rencontres d'Arles photo exhibit "Beneath the Surface" continues at multiple venues until September 29th. While in Arles, visit Lee Ufan Arles, which opened in 2022. Here is our Arles City Guide with tips on restaurants, museums, art centres, and places to shop.
If you are in the Alpilles, Keith recommends visiting the Jean Moulin Museum in Saint-Andiol for WWII History in Provence.
The Journées du Patrimoine occur on September 21 and 22, with open doors at national French monuments. This year's theme – "Heritage of routes, networks and connections" and "Maritime heritage" - is an opportunity to explore those public and private spaces. Take advantage of free access and guided visits (note: booking is often required). Weather permitting, explore a private garden. Many open only a few times a year. Here is the official website.
