WEEKEND RECIPE | PERFECT PASTA
Recipe by Melissa Blease
Crab Courgetti Spaghetti
This simple, elegant pasta dish puts the intrinsically salty/sweet, slightly nutty flavour of both creamy white and rich brown crab in the spotlight, turning the dish into the prandial version, if you like, of an oceanic breeze wafting in on a tide of sumptuous courgetti spaghetti, enlivened by the gentle thrum of chilli heat and an uplifting citrus blast.
Combining the spiralized courgettes with the pasta not only cuts down on carbs, but brings a light, fresh touch to a dish that perfectly bridges the gap between salad days and the impending season of mellow fruitfulness. If you haven't got a spiralizer, most supermarkets sell packets of fresh courgettes already spiralized for you.
If you can't get hold of (or simply don't like!) crab, add around 150g fresh, raw king prawns with the sliced shallot at the start of the recipe instead.
Ingredients (serves 2-3) |
100g dried spaghetti 5-6 tbsp olive oil 1 large shallot, peeled and thinly sliced 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 2-3 courgettes (you need around 500g in total) 100g white and brown crab, fresh or tinned The juice of ½ lemon Freshly chopped dill, freshly chopped parsley
Method |
1. Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water according to the packet instructions. Drain well and set to one side.
2. Gently heat around 3 tablespoons of the oil in a large frying pan. Add the sliced shallot and sauté for around 3 minutes until the shallot is just turning translucent. Add the chilli and garlic and continue to sauté for around a minute, taking care not to allow the garlic to brown.
3. Add the spiralized courgettes to the pan and fry for a further 2 minutes – any more, and the courgettes will release too much water.
4. Add the crab, cooked spaghetti, lemon juice and dill to the pan. Drizzle with another 1-2 tbsp olive oil into the pan, season well with plenty of salt and lots of black pepper and toss everything together using tongs. Serve immediately in warm bowls, scattered with more freshly chopped dill and a smattering of freshly chopped parsley.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
A few years ago the creative art, design and craft magazine UPPERCASE devised a series of standalone 'inspirational' titles to complement and provide more depth to areas it's covered so far in 50-odd issues (such as florals, quilting, ceramics, printmaking etc.). The super-lush and absurdly idea-packed The Uppercase Encyclopedia of Inspiration series hits ten issues with the release of 'Art Supplies'. This vast tome examines the provenance, lore and enduring appeal of art-making tools and supplies, explored via profiles of artists, artisans, collectors and venerable manufacturers. These titles have proved so popular that all the initial releases have been reprinted so if you're lacking creative inspiration right now, well, here you go | £35

Joanne Cope's 'Cattle Paintings', 26 – 29 August, 15 New Bond Street
Bath-based artist Joanne Cope will be exhibiting her latest collection of paintings in Bath this Bank Holiday weekend.
Cope's impressive portraits of the ordinary cow are wonderfully engaging and alluring. The majority of her subjects are painted looking out from the canvas to engage the viewer.
She places the cattle in traditional portrait 'poses', lovingly rendering them in oil paint, using soft brushwork, a subdued colour palette and dramatic lighting to create striking images.

LOOKING BACK | DELIVERY SERVICE

Words by Andrew Swift |

Wansdyke Post Office |
At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 30 post offices in Bath. This was one of them – Wansdyke Post Office at 2 Beech View, Claverton Down Road. The postmaster was Fred Ring and it was open, like other sub-post offices, on weekdays only, from 8am to 8pm. Postmen were also much more in evidence than they are today. Before the First World War, there were five postal deliveries a day in town and up to eleven collections from post offices and post boxes. Most local post – and some long-distance post – arrived on the day it was sent; it was possible, for example, to get a letter to Radstock the same day by posting it at the main post office before 4.10pm. You could even get a letter to London on the same day if it was in the post by 3.25pm. Shortly after this photograph was taken, Wansdyke Post Office was relocated a short distance to 2 Copseland, which today, like 2 Beech View, is a private house.

PROPERTY | HANDSOME GEORGIAN TERRACE
Cambridge Terrace, Widcombe, Bath BA2 |
Offered for sale by Hamptons estate agents in Bath
The approach to this handsome Georgian terrace with its attractive frontages to No 7 is charming; the house has a stone courtyard enclosed by wrought iron railings.
The entrance hall leads down to the lower ground floor, housing the kitchen/breakfast room. This provides the much-requested features of a bespoke handmade, hand painted kitchen, plus plenty of room for a dining table and a door out to an attractive garden: all three boxes ticked.
In the hallway, exposed flagstones continue into the family bathroom providing both a freestanding bath and a walk-in shower. There are two vaulted areas used as a music room, utility and office area. The ground floor drawing room is of note, with tall ceilings and two windows benefitting from far reaching views over the garden, city and to a few of the seven hills that hug Bath. The wooden floorboards have been stripped and polished, and the marble fireplace makes a central feature. The adjacent room is currently used as a guest room and also has an attractive period fireplace.
The second floor principal bedroom has the most magnificent aspect showing even more of our honey coloured city, as well as the expanse of greenery we also enjoy. Once again, an original, pretty cast iron fireplace with cabinetry either side adds to the charm of this room. There is an adjacent bedroom on this floor and up a Victorian spiral staircase is the attic with a further bedroom. This room benefits from possibly the best view in the house.
Outside is a beautifully designed contoured flagstone patio next to the kitchen – the perfect place for relaxing with a dining terrace including climbing plants on the walls and fencing. The garden continues with a level lawn all enclosed by stone walling and trellis covered in climbing plants. Established bee loving flowerbeds have been planted on both sides, with a central path leading to a further lawned area with mature shrubs.
An additional patio area surrounds a smart wooden home office. A much sought after garage is located just down from the property. Guide price £1,450,000
For more pictures and all the details click here to see the property on the Hamptons website.
