Theatre Review: Kiss of the Spider Woman at Bristol Old Vic
Words by Rosanna Spence | Production images by Marc Brenner
"Kiss of the Spider Woman is ferocious from the first scene. We’re immediately dropped into a brutal prison setting, but there also appears to be a classic movie star in jail with us and window-dresser-turned-cellmate Molina: Aurora, reprising her role as the dangerous Spider Woman (played by Anna-Jane Casey (West End’s Cabaret, Billy Elliot), who’s clearly having a delicious time – tantalisingly sassy, with a wicked curl in the corner of her wide smile. The slightest side eye to the audience and flick of the head draws everyone in, all at risk of her fatal kiss)."

If you’re considering a Bank Holiday Monday picnic in the park, by the sea or simply in your own back garden, this epic, fully-loaded sarnie is the way forward.
The Muffaletta was invented in New Orleans in the early 1900s by Sicilian baker Salvatore Lupo, who wanted to create a traditional Sicilian lunch in portable format for construction workers who frequented his bakery. Little did he know that variations on his feast-to-go would eventually become one of the most popular sandwiches across both the USA and Europe.
Charcuterie, cheese, hard boiled eggs, prawns, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, tapenade, sweet piccalilli: you can freestyle your Muffaletta according to taste, but be sure to assemble it at least an hour ahead of serving to allow all the ingredients to get fully acquainted.

Orange is the New White: Wine Tasting, 14 May
Orange wine is one of the oldest winemaking traditions, dating back thousands of years to Georgia, yet it remains relatively unknown to many wine drinkers today. Made by fermenting white grapes on their skins, like a red wine, this method produces wines with an amber hue, gentle tannins and a distinctive texture. Aromas can range from dried citrus and stone fruit to tea, spice and savoury notes, often with a subtle nutty or honeyed character. These wines are ideal for developing your palate and understanding how structure and texture shape flavour. If this sounds of interest, join us for our upcoming orange wine tasting and explore a style shaped by centuries of winemaking tradition.

We have all come to know Kilver Court and Gardens as the home of Mulberry and TOAST, but a host of new tenants and a carefully considered re-mastering of the site, mean that there are now many more reasons to visit the iconic Shepton Mallet destination.
Once more under the ownership of the Showering family, whose ancestors first purchased the site in the 1950s, Kilver Court and Gardens is now home to new independent fashion and homewares retailers, a chef-run café, yoga, a pilates studio and a coworking space.

One Foot In The Dark at The Wardrobe Theatre, 5 - 6 May
An exciting new dance-theatre-spoken word collaboration from Divija Melally and Saili Katebe – showing as part of Diaspora 2026.
The answers we are often looking for are waiting on the other side of discomfort, challenging norms and old stories from the past. One Foot In The Dark is an exploration of our known and unknown experiences of identity, culture and change through text and movement. It comprises a double bill of a solo The Skeleton Is White and duet Six Degrees From Home, both honest explorations of two artists understanding what it means to navigate through life, questions and unknowns.

Testimonials from Junior members of Bristol & Clifton Golf Club
Junior members of Bristol & Clifton Golf Club were recently asked to share their experiences of fundraising for their chosen charities. James Goldsmith aged 11 wrote...
I have been a member of B&C Juniors for just over 2.5 years. I love being a member at B&C because everyone at the club is really helpful and the coaching staff and other members always provide me encouragement in all aspects of my golf.
The club has great facilities for both practising and improving my golf, as well as a lovely course that is well looked after and gives both me as a junior, and older and better members, a good challenge.
The clubhouse has a great community feel about it and serves really tasty food after a long round! The club has a strong junior section and last summer, we won The Golf Foundation’s ‘Junior Club of the Year’ award which was presented at Wentworth . There are loads of group coaching sessions and competitions that are specifically for juniors, and I have been lucky enough to represent B&C in the Gloucestershire Golf Sixes League last year.

Bristol begins 121 days of action to become UK’s first Civil Rights Capital
On the 29 April, the anniversary of the Bristol Bus Boycott, Bristol has set out plans to become the UK Capital of Civil Rights by 2029—positioning the city as a national testbed for tackling inequality.
As one of the first steps toward this vision, ActiFest launches as a new Civic Lab—inviting the city to shape what a Civil Rights Capital can be.
Led by grassroots movement Curiosity UnLtd alongside a consortium of partners, the initiative marks the beginning of a multi-year effort to break the link between background and life chances—and to develop a model that could be adopted by cities across the UK.

Bristol Rovers v Notts County, 2 May
Bristol Rovers will look to finish the 2025/26 season with a ninth straight win in Sky Bet League Two when they travel to Notts County on Saturday.
It was an emphatic final home game of the season for the Gas against local rivals Cheltenham, with the Pirates winning 4-0. Ellis Harrison was at the heart of the action, heading in the opener within two minutes before getting his second just before half-time.
The forward then secured his hat-trick in the 56th minute with a clever chip looping over Joe Day and into the back of the net. Shaq Forde then completed the scoring with five minutes left to play, getting onto Joe Quigley's flick to score from close range right in front of Manager Steve Evans in the Thatchers End.
The Magpies secured a comfortable 1-0 victory over Colchester United, with Nick Tsaroulla's clinical finish keeping the Magpies' promotion dreams alive.

Waterside Weddings at Harbour House
Set along Bristol’s floating harbour, Harbour House offers a wedding experience defined by character and a true sense of place. From the first enquiry through to the final taxi home every detail is thoughtfully guided yet entirely bespoke – a celebration shaped around the couple, not a prescribed package. At its heart, Harbour House is a blank canvas. With the support of an experienced wedding planner, couples are invited to build a day that feels completely their own. That might mean a relaxed BBQ spilling out onto the terrace, generous sharing feasts with family and friends or simply a space that transforms effortlessly into a dancefloor as the evening unfolds.
The setting itself is steeped in Bristol’s story. As one of the last remaining 19th-century transit sheds on the harbour, the building carries a quiet sense of history with ties to both Brunel’s engineering legacy and the city’s ever-present creative spirit.
