Today,
we are highlighting the achievements of African-American automobile
designers who have made significant contributions to the industry. It
is important to recognize that their accomplishments are diverse and
deeply rooted in various areas of the automotive design.
One
of the designers we are highlighting is Edward T. Welburn, who knew
he wanted a career in automotive design at a young age. He pursued
this passion by studying design, sculpture, and painting at Howard
University's School of Fine Arts. Welburn secured an internship at
General Motors after communicating with them during his time at
Howard, and later served as GM's Vice President of Global Design for
over a decade. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of
innovative concepts like the Cadillac Ciel and Buick Avista.
Another
notable designer is Ralph Victor Gilles, who began drawing concept
vehicles at just eight years old. After attending the College for
Creative Studies in Detroit and receiving an Executive MBA from
Michigan State University, Gilles joined Chrysler in 1992. He has led
the design teams responsible for the award-winning 2005 Chrysler 300
and the 2014 SRT Dodge Viper. Gilles also served as the Head of
Design for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles before becoming the chief design
officer of the newly merged Stellantis group in 2021.
Michael
Burton's interest in automotive design began when he won an art
competition at the age of 10. After sending a sample of his artwork
to General Motors at 13, Burton was encouraged to apply to the
College for Creative Studies. He was eventually hired by Ford Motor
Company and contributed to the design of the 1979 Ford Mustang and
1980 Ford Thunderbird, among other projects. Burton later worked for
Chrysler, where he became one of the first African Americans working
in their design studios. He has also contributed to the exterior and
interior designs of many vehicles for General Motors.
Crystal
Windham is another remarkable designer who joined General Motors in
1994. In 2008, Windham became the first African-American female
director in GM Design's history. She has led multiple vehicle brands
and spearheaded award-winning interior designs for the 2016 Chevrolet
Malibu and 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Windham also served as the director
of Cadillac Interior Design.
To God Bebthe Glory for these Amazing African-American Automobile Designers have
made significant contributions to the industry and opened doors for
others to share their creativity with the world. It is important to
recognize and celebrate their achievements in automotive design.
