Enjoy Saint Patrick’s Day Without Alcohol!
Saint Patrick's Day activities and traditions often include alcohol. By instead focusing on having a good time with friends and family, you can stay on track with your recovery while still enjoying the holiday. Here are four ways to celebrate without drinking alcohol.
- Cook a traditional Irish meal. Food brings people together and is an excellent way to celebrate a cultural holiday like Saint Patrick’s Day.
- Listen to Irish music. Traditional Irish songs are lively and the type of music that practically demands that you stand up and dance along … or at least tap your foot to the beat.
- Sign up for a Saint Patty’s Day run or walk. If running is a hobby of yours or finishing a race is a bucket-list goal, Saint Patrick’s Day is an excellent opportunity to join an event. Usually, participants choose to dress as leprechauns, paint themselves green or carry a pot of “gold” with them just for fun!
- Spend time with sober friends. What matters most about Saint Patrick’s Day is that it brings friends and family together for an enjoyable time. You can spend the holiday doing whatever activity you want without having a drink. The real fun comes from the company you choose to share it with.
Always Be Prepared
If you choose to attend a party where alcohol may be present, have an exit plan in place if things get too overwhelming. Here are ideas to help you get through the day:
- Bring someone with you as a means of support.
- Drive yourself so you don’t have to wait or rely on someone else to leave the party.
- Bring your own nonalcoholic drinks.
- Know of a support group meeting you can attend, if needed.
