Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Freedom
and
the Law”
Aim: Explore the
difference between living
according to God’s law and living by faith in Christ Jesus;
Celebrate
the
freedom God’s promise gives to all who believe in Christ,
and Practice
ways
they
can
embrace this liberation and oneness in Christ.
Background:
Galatians
3
Bible Lesson:
Galatians
3:18-29
“And
if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according
to the promise.” Galatians
3:29
KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study comes from Apostle
Paul’s Epistle or Letter to the believers in the
Roman province of Galatia.
This area is believed to be
modern day southern Turkey. This
letter is written to correct a false “gospel” proclaimed by a
group called Judaizers, who were Jews who believed that non-Jews had
to be circumcised and conform to all of the Jewish laws to
become Christians and
refuted Paul’s teaching of the true Gospel which was based upon
faith in and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul introduced these
folks in Galatia
to the true Gospel on his first missionary journey and actually
returned two additional times. Unfortunately, the people were easily
persuaded and there
was a risk of their abandoning the true Gospel; therefore, Paul was
compelled
to address the false teaching. He opens his letter boldly defending
his Apostleship and quickly dispelling the existence multiple
“gospels.” Paul recounts the authenticity of
his acceptance
of the true Gospel not from
man, but from God. In Galatians 3, he confronts the matter of
deception head on by asking
the question “who has tricked the readers of the letter to abandon
the true Gospel which is through faith in Jesus Christ?” Paul
reminds them of their acceptance of the truth when they first
received it. He brings back to their rememberance
that even Abraham was accounted as righteous because of his belief
in God and neither
circumcision nor the Law had come upon the scene.
Those who possess faith like Abraham become children of Abraham and
heirs of God’s promise to Abraham. God
promised Abraham that through his seed many nations would be blessed
not just the Jewish nation. This promise was fulfilled through the
sacrificial death of Jesus Christ upon the cross.
-
Galatians
3:18-22,
Purpose of the Law: First,
God does not break His promises and His promise to Abraham occurred
hundreds of years prior to the Law. Paul argues if
one could receive the inheritance by keeping the Law, then God’s
promise to Abraham would be set aside. He continues to explain that
the Law was given along side the promise to clearly show people how
far they were from being within God’s will. In other words, it
showed
them their sins. Neither was the law a permanent tool, but it was to
serve until the advent of Jesus Christ who was the fulfillment of
the Law.
Moses, who served as a mediator between the people and God, received
the law and presented it to the people. In contrast, God’s promise
to Abraham did not
require
a mediator. God’s promise was made directly to Abraham. Abraham
was actually asleep, when God passed through the bloody halves of
the animals which sealed His promise to Abraham. Paul
strongly asserts that there is no conflict between God’s law and
God’s promise. The law was not provided to give new life for it is
humanly impossible for humankind to completely obey the law in its
entirety, because all humankind are prisoners of sin. God’s
promise of
freedom from sin can only come through faith in Jesus Christ.
-
Galatians
3:23-29,
The Coming of Faith: Before
faith in
Jesus Christ was available, God’s law served as a guard alerting
one how far he/she
had missed the mark established
by God. Paul states that it
was a protective mechanism until faith was revealed. Humankind
needed to be justified or made right with God and the law was like a
schoolmaster pointing to Christ. It provided evidence of our need to
be made right with God. When the opportunity for faith in Jesus
Christ was available, there was no longer a need to be under the
law. Those who place their faith in Christ Jesus become the children
of God. A
believer’s emergence
in water baptism is an outward display
of what has taken place in the heart when one
accepts
Christ and receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit into Christ. Paul
exclaims that we are united
with Christ in this
baptism and that a believer puts on Christ. One
translation uses the phrased “ being
clothed in Christ.”
In other words, we take on a new life in Christ. No longer is there
a separation because of nationality (Jew or Gentile) or status in
life (slave or free) or gender
(male or female). We are all one, believers, in Christ Jesus. All
believers belong to Christ and are true children of Abraham and his
heirs which mean that God’s promise to Abraham belongs to us. As
Abraham’s faith in God brought about justification, likewise our
faith in God does the same.
Take
Aways:
-
Obedience
of the law is motived by obligation; whereas, Faith in Jesus Christ
motives us to express our appreciation and gratitude by seeking to
please our Redeemer.
-
Freedom
from sin can only come through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior.
-
The
faith exhibited by Abraham hundreds of years ago is the
same
the faith we must have in Jesus Christ in 2022. (Abraham looked
forward to the Messiah’s
arrival and we look back at His
arrival)
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was
accounted to him for righteousness." Romans 4:3 NKJV
“Therefore,
having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into
this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of
God.” Romans
5:1-2 NKJV
“But
that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God [is] evident,
for "the just shall live by faith."” Gal 3:11 NKJV
“[But
someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show
me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my
works.” James
2:18 NKJV
“For
by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves; [it is] the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone
should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV
“But
without faith [it is] impossible to please [Him], for he who comes to
God must believe that He is, and [that] He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
