Hi, gorgeous!

Writing you from NYC this week, where I am sweating in the humidity and adjusting to the fact that I'm the mom of a college student now. I'm not crying, you're crying! But seriously, where does the time go?

By the way, one of my favorite things about social media is seeing pictures that people post of their kids on the first day of school. Your kids are cute. I love your dogs, too!

Okay, here's your 5 things for the week. ⏬

    THREADS OF GOLD
    1. golden threads on Twitter

Either Twitter is going to get its sh*t together and learn to ban actual hate speech, or the platform is going to go the way of MySpace. In the meanwhile, there are still some gems on there.

May I present to you two threads that are fantastic

"Do you have white teenage sons?" taught me a LOT about how kind teenage boys get radicalized online and what parents can do about it. Please read it.

Dr. Sayed A Tabatabai writes beautiful, human stories about his work as a nephrologist. His story of how a dog cured a man's broken heart (and more) is especially poignant. This doc's humanity is inspiring.

And one more thread for your consideration: What YOU can do about the burning Amazon, from the Rainforest Alliance.

    2. Lil' Kim Girls Cruise

I'm trying to stop calling things "guilty pleasures" because I find nothing pleasurable about guilt. But do you know what I do enjoy?

    Lil' Kim Girls Cruise!

This show is giving me life right now. It's some super-talented women who are in it for the female friendship, on a ridiculous yacht wearing capital-F FASHUN. That scratches a lot of itches for me. And it doesn't hurt that it also has Mya and Chili from TLC in it. Long live the 90's revival!

(BTW I am also loving the 90210 reboot. It's weird in the good way.)

    MY KICK ASS FRIEND
    3. writing + money

My friend Heather Demetrios just launched Page Count, which is a new Medium publication for writers. She launched it with a pretty amazingly personal first post:

How To Lose A Third Of A Million Dollars Without Really Trying

She is blowing the lid off of conversations about money and I am here for it! (She also has a lot of free resources about mindfulness for writers, and I love her newsletter.)

If you enjoy the email, please share! Got it from a friend? Subscribe here.

    4. ideas for promoting my book?

Woahhhh my book comes out in exactly two months! I'm trying to figure out ways to promote it without being annoying. So let me go ahead and ask:

    • Do you know anyone who might like to write about my book? (or me, or meditation, or the wellness industrial complex, etc.?)
    • Is there anyone in your network in NYC who is trying to promote a product that might be aligned with the book? I am thinking of doing a launch party where the book comes alive and am looking for partners. (Maybe a CBD product, wellness brand, sustainable clothing company, etc. Bonus points for woman-or-POC-owned!)

If you can think of these, or other ways I could get the word out, please do let me know! πŸ™

    5. answer: it's . . . complicated

Question: Is the modern mindfulness movement a scam? I agree with about 50% of this guy's points, and think he's about 50% full of crap. (This article is from Fast Company, but 'McMindfulness' is pretty clever so he's getting a ton of press.)

Question: Is wellness only for the well-to-do? Is 'trickle-down wellness' an actual thing that can happen? Is a private wellness club an oxy-moron? And can someone comp me a membership? (Outside Magazine)

Question: How can we de-colonize our yoga practices? Did white people start yoga? No. Did white people ban Indian people from practicing yoga during British colonial rule? Yes. (And we also banned Hawaiians from surfing, BTW.) Are there things we can do now to de-colonialize our own yoga practices? Of course, and this post is a wonderful place to start!πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

By the way, if you were one of the people who let me know last week that you'd like a friendly postcard mailed to you, I hope to get those out this weekend! And it's not too late to request a note from me–just reply with your mailing addy and it'll be on it's way. (International is a-okay.)

Going to head upstate this next week to try to close out the summer season with some time spent in nature. On my laptop. You know how life is. πŸ˜‰

    Love,
