As a part of the new roles that we are seeing in the SEND Service, to support the Change Partnership Programme (CPP) work, we sat down with our second newly appointed Young Person's Champion. In July, we spoke to Ffion, who just started the role at Swindon Borough Council. This month we talk to another new appointee, Chloe. As always with these profiles, we talk about the role and what impact it will have for children and young people with SEND, their parents and the professional's that support them.
What is your role?
I am one of the new Young Person’s Champions within the SEND service and I am working closely with the local offer team (Andrew and Rachel)
What does this role involve?
My role involves working with children, young people and their families to ensure that children and young people have access to the support they may need, ensuring that the local offer is accessible to for both young people and parent/carers. I also go through the local inbox twice daily to ensure any emails are logged such as things like change requests. My main goal is to ensure that children and young people remain at the heart of everything we do within the service.
Why is your role important to children and young people and families in Swindon?
We’re all aware of how difficult the SEND system can be to understand and navigate, so my main aim is to work with children, young people and their families to ensure the process is as accessible, understandable and inclusive as possible – this ensures that we create positive outcomes for children, young people and families within the SEND service. By working within SBC and the local offer we are able to come together to provide appropriate support and information for everyone within the SEND community. One of our main goals is to make all our support and information accessible and inclusive.
I think the most important aspect of my role that is incredibly important for children and young people (CYP) and their families to understand is that they have a designated person that is championing their voice - willing for it to be heard and motivated to ensure that it’s listened to.
What are your goals in your new role?
Some of the targets I have set myself as new Young Person’s Champion are:
- To work through the local offer inbox daily and ensure that any new request are logged and the relevant information is passed on to the correct people via email so they can respond accordingly.
- To visit some special education schools with some print outs of a few local offer pages so I can gain views of young people, gain an idea of any information they feel is missing and most importantly ensure that they feel as though the local offer is accessible to them.
- I am also working on a short quiz to send out to a range of special education schools to gain feedback from young people around the local offer. This may cover things such as, have they heard of the Swindon local offer? Do they find it engaging? What is their favourite section and why? Is there any part they struggle to understand?
What do you love in your new role?
- Collaborating with children, young people and their families to ensure everything that we do within the SEND service is child centred and all about them
- Collaborating with colleagues in the Borough to maximise the best outcomes for children, young people and their families
- Getting to interact with multiple different children young people, families, professionals and colleagues to ensure that we’re working at our best in being able to provide CYP within the SEND service the voice they deserve!
