Youth for Revitalisation of Democracy

The 4th EaP Youth Conference that took place on 11 - 12 July 2022 in Prague has involved over 100 young people from the EaP region and the EU. Participants engaged in hours of discussing, debating, learning and networking. The conference gathered recommendations from attendees on how to improve mechanisms of youth engagement on local and national levels in the EaP countries. Young people called on the EU, national governments and CSOs to increase cooperation with communities outside the capitals and improve awareness-raising among disadvantaged youth about existing opportunities. Also, the young leaders adopted a declaration, calling for the promotion of democratic development and youth participation in the EaP. The declaration will be sent to national governments and EU stakeholders.

Working Group meetings

The EaP CSF has held virtual meetings with all five Working Groups at the end of June and beginning of July. Extensive feedback was collected from the members on how the EaP policy should be reshaped in terms of its architecture and targets. 

Re-granting to members

The EaP CSF has received 47 applications for our Re-granting to members, aiming to address the needs of Ukrainian members and support our members' capacity to respond to the war. Out of the 47 applications, there are 9 eligible proposals under Lot 2 and 29 eligible proposals under Lot 3. The applications are now being evaluated and the applicants will be informed shortly about the outcome of the selection.

Civil society in and outside Ukraine is at the forefront of mobilising aid, monitoring the situation, fostering solidarity with people fleeing the war, and calling for peace. Psychological help for Ukrainian Refugees from People in Need

People in Need, a civil society organisation based in the Czech Republic, runs a helpline in Ukraine which people can call and discuss their problems and traumas with a psychologist. People in Need also offers help in the form of mobile teams. The coordinator of the People in Need’s psychological activities says that the helpline receives up to 50 calls per day, and adds that people will still need psychological support for at least five years after the war is over. Europe’s gas crisis: Why a price cap on Russian natural gas works better than a saving plan

Ana Otilia Nutu, Steering Committee Co-Chair of the EaP CSF and Energy Policy Analyst at the Think Tank Expert Forum, and Ana Furtuna, Director of the Secretariat of the EaP CSF argue that capping Russian gas prices would not only be effective, but a moral European response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In their opinion piece published in The Brussels Times, they suggest that Russia cannot afford to carry out its threats of cutting gas supplies to the EU as it lacks the physical storage capacity and cannot export it elsewhere due to infrastructural and trade limitations. EaP SCF Statement in solidarity with the people of Vinnytsia and in condemnation of Russian targeting of civilians

On 14 July, Ukrainians suffered another major, brutal attack at the hands of the Russian aggressor. Members of the Steering Committee of the EaP CSF express their solidarity with the people of Vinnytsia and call upon the international community to ensure due investigation and prosecution for all violations and crimes committed by the Russian forces, including their political superiors.

9th EU-Georgia Civil Society Platform meeting

Sintija Bernava who is an EU Coordinator of WG4 at the EaP CSF, took part in the 9th meeting of the EU-Georgia Civil Society Platform that took place on 28 June 2022 in Tbilisi. The platform is one of the bodies set up under the Association Agreement between the European Union and Georgia that enables SC organisations from both sides to monitor the implementation process and draw up recommendations for submission to the relevant authorities. During the meeting, application of Georgia for EU membership and prospects of EU membership were discussed, as well the role of civil society in the post-war recovery and human rights in the face of war and crisis. A joint declaration was discussed and adopted.

EaP CSF Steering Committee statement on the sentencing of political prisoner, philosopher and civil society leader Uladzimir Matskevich

Following the imprisonment of the Belorusian philosopher and civil society leader Uladzimir Matskevich on 23 June, the Steering Committee of the EaP CSF calls on the Belarusian authorities to release him immediately, together with all unlawfully detained civil society activists, human rights defenders, journalists and students.

​​​​Disinformation in the digital age. Effects on democracy, state and society

A participant representing EaP CSF Jasur Mammadov took part in 3rd Eastern partnership e-governance conference Disinformation in the digital age. Effects on democracy, state and society that happened on 20 May in Tartu, Estonia. During the conference participants discussed such topics as digitalization, disinformation and misinformation, as well as issues around them. The participants also talked about possible solutions to the existing threats that can occur in the digitalised world where information can be easily manipulated.

Online Course: Teaching Ukrainian in Classes with Teaching in the Languages of National Minorities

The EU-supported project ‘Learning Together’ together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine offers a free online course, which will be helpful for Ukrainian language teachers who teach in classes where the language of instruction of the language of national minorities. The course will help to get to know how to prepare for language learning, will explain what factors affect the acquisition of a second language, etc.
