3,096 New COVID-19 Cases & 32 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for January 16, 2021
(206 New Cases in Fayette County)
Even with the availability of the long awaited COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people is a monumental task and will take time. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
"Called to Heal"
Aim: Study Mark’s account of Jesus healing the man who was paralyzed, Appreciate how one’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs are intertwined, and Pray for God’s healing grace to touch us at our particular point of need.
Background: Mark 2:1-12
Bible Lesson: Mark 2:1-12
Memory Verse:
"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, '[Your] sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise, take up your bed and walk'? Mark 2:9 NKJV
Some Highlights:
- Leading up to today’s Bible Study passage, Jesus had been traveling through the region of Galilee and Judea teaching in the Synagogues and performing many miracleous healings. Jesus had most recently healed a leper as He traveled to Capernaum to continue teaching, preaching, and healing.
- The lesson opens with Jesus preaching in Capernaum to an overflowing crowd in a house which some theologians speculated to have belonged to Peter. Word had quickly spread that Jesus was in town and many had come to hear and to see this miracle worker. The crowd was so great that it overflowed out of the door of the house.
- While Jesus preached, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. Their goal was to bring the man to Jesus for healing, but there was no path to enter the house to see Jesus. Undetered by the crowd, the men climbed the stairs that led to the roof, which were common for houses of that time and era. The men removed roof tiles which allowed them to lower the mat with the paralyzed man into the room at the feet of Jesus who was still preaching.
- Jesus acknowledged the man on the mat in front of him with these words, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” Jesus was responding to the faith exhibited by the five men. For they came believing that Jesus could heal the paralyzed man and they did not let the crowd prevent them from getting access to Jesus’ healing power.
- In the crowd, there were teachers of the religious law, potentially they were scribes who transcribed the Hebrew Bible, (the Law, Prophets and Writings). These teachers did not say anything out loud, but immediately in their minds they questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sin, because forgiveness of sin was exclusively left to God. They mentally accused Jesus of blasphemy. Jesus being both Divine and Human, showed His Omniscience (All Knowingness) by revealing the thoughts of the religious law teachers and asking them “Why do you question this in your hearts?” Jesus said “Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man “Your sins are forgiven” or “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk”?
- Next, Jesus showed His Omnipotence (All Powerfulness) by telling the paralyzed man, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” Jesus’ command not only healed the paralyzed man, but restored his strength which enabled him to rise from his mat, lift it up and walk through the stunned crowd carrying his mat while, no doubt, giving loud Praise to God for His Healing Power!
- The reaction of the crowd was amazement and praise to God, for they had never seen anything like this before. Jesus had shown that He was the Messiah, the Son of God, and that He possessed both the power to forgive sin and to heal. The miracle of forgiveness was not apparent to the crowd while the miracle of healing was very visible to all present.
Take Aways:
- We need Jesus for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and He is All Powerful, All Knowing, and is in All Places at All Times.
- We need to willingly and intentionally bring others in need to Jesus for healing. He is able to provide whatever is needed. Praying for one another is a way of bringing others to Him.
- We need to give God Praise and Thanksgiving when He provides or grants healing and deliverance.
Bible Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12 KJV
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 KJV
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;” Philippians 2:10 KJV
