Newtown Residents Speak Out on the Issues

What I Learned While Canvassing

As you may know, the team of Democrats running for three seats on the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors and Tax Collector – aka Newtown’s Voice – has a tag line: “Listening to you for a better Newtown!”

One way we listen to residents is through simple polls and surveys. Currently, the team is collecting responses to a poll as part of our door-to-door canvassing (the Canvassing Poll). In addition, I am running an online survey (the Online Survey), which asks slightly different questions. This article summarizes the up-to-date results of this poll and survey.

Townships Take on Verizon et al Regarding Online Privacy

At the September 6, 2017, Lower Makefield Township (LMT) Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting, Supervisor John B. Lewis proposed an ordinance to protect the online privacy of Lower Makefield residents. At issue aret the provisions of a new federal law signed by president Trump that makes it “legal and lucrative for your Internet Service Provider (ISP; i.e., Verizon FIOS, Xfinity, etc.) to sell your browsing history, app usage and personally-identifiable information without your ability to opt-out or know what is being shared with a third party.”

This Week at the BOS

This Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting should be interesting. On the agenda is the Village at Newtown Redevelopment (Brixmor) plan. This item was on the August 9, 2017, agenda but was withdrawn at the last minute. Good thing too because the discussion of building a cell phone tower on the Bucks County Community College campus consumed over one and a half hours! In the end, the Supervisors voted on what color the privacy fence should be! After hearing all the pros and cons of different colors, they picked… beige!

I had to sit through all that before I was able to make my comments about a 24/7 drug drop-off box (see here), which fell mostly on deaf ears. The Bucks County Courier Times reporter present at the meeting later told me he was surprised my comments generated no response from the Supervisors.

The other interesting item on this week’s agenda is the “Wrights Road Trail Project - Pay Estimate #1.” This trail will be along Wrights Road and connect into Newtown Grant. See the August 28, 2017, issue of Newtown News Update here.
