At the USET SPF Impact Week meeting in March, the Federal Reserve’s Center for Indian Country Development (CICD) shared an opportunity for USET Tribal Nations to partner on a groundbreaking survey that could be a critical tool for Tribal Nations, USET, and Indian Country to articulate the economic contributions of our Native Nations. The Survey of Native Nations (SNN) collects information on Tribal governments’ financials---revenues, expenditures, and some limited non-financial information. The survey will allow CICD to provide unique analysis for your Tribal Nation, aggregate comparative analysis for participating Tribal Nations (all anonymized), and comprehensive comparative analysis to financials of other governments important to you (local counties, cities, and state). CICD staff have successfully piloted the survey with Tribal Nations in Montana last year, and the team has developed comprehensive support systems to provide any type of support your Tribal Nations might need to complete the survey.
Outside of receiving this free and independent analysis to use in your decision-making and policy pursuits, USET would greatly benefit from the aggregate, anonymized analysis to use in our policy advocacy. USET member Tribal Nations make up a representative sample of Indian Country, so the more Tribal Nation that complete the survey the better aggregate data there is to support needed policy conversations.
CICD is part of the Federal Reserve, which is an independent entity that stewards and protects a lot of sensitive confidential data. CICD is not part of the federal government. CICD has built a robust data infrastructure to secure all Tribal participant data and has research and data use principles that uphold best practices in Tribal data sovereignty. We highly encourage participation in the Survey of Native Nations and below is additional information about this initiative. Casey Lozar (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes) is the director of CICD and leads a team of Native and non-Native professionals who have developed the capacity to do this work. They will be following up with you, if they haven’t already, to discuss the survey with you.
We appreciate you considering this important opportunity for USET and your Tribal Nation to partner with CICD. If there are any questions or to learn more, please reach out to USET’s Office of Economic Development at RNaragon@usetinc.org.
