|
Music to fill the city across the year's final long weekend |
|
The summer season may be winding down in Bristol, but not before a huge Bank Holiday weekend crammed with music – and there’s something to suit everyone.
Join Bristol’s very own post-punk heroes IDLES as they bring their signature raw energy and passion to O2 Academy Bristol for a special evening in aid of War Child on Saturday night (24 August, 6pm). Some verified resale tickets are still available, but you’ll have to move quickly to snap them up.
Elsewhere, Massive Attack bring their, well, massive gig to the Downs on Sunday 25 August from 2pm. The all-day show will trial new standards for the decarbonisation of live music. Support comes in the shape of Killer Mike, Lankum and others. More info and tickets via the website.
Fans of classical music should head to the Bristol Beacon for the first ever BBC Proms gigs to take place in our city. Four concerts make up Proms Bristol this weekend, including immersive experience The Virtuous Circle from Charles Hazlewood and Paraorchestra (artwork pictured above), the BBC Singers at 100 with a selection of a cappella masterpieces, Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with soloist Evelyn Glennie and a fun-filled CBeebies: Ocean Adventure with Kwamé Ryan, the Southbank Sinfonia and Andy Day. Tickets and info here.
Plus, free music festival Old City Sounds returns to various locations in on Saturday 24 August, from toe-tapping jazz and traditional Irish folk to immersive DJs and heart-pounding alt-rock. Check out what’s on here.

WEEKEND RECIPE | SLIDING INTO THE BANK HOLIDAY

Don't worry if you can't find burger rolls baked together, you can bake them separately
Bank Holiday Tear 'n' Share Sliders
Recipe by Melissa Blease
If a downpour puts a dampener on your plans for the last garden get-together of the season, hang fire on attempting to fire up the barbecue and opt for this easy-going burger traybake instead, guaranteed to put a smile on everybody's faces whatever the weather.
Small bread rolls that have been baked together (and still remain attached to each other), really put the 'tear' element into the tear 'n' share party. But if you can't get your hands on them, use individual small bread rolls and pack them into the roasting tin as snuggly as you can.
To make a vegetarian version, substitute the beef meatballs with a plant-based alternative, readily available in both the fridge and freezer sections of all big supermarkets.
Ingredients (makes 12 sliders)
12 beef meatballs 12 small bread rolls (see note above) Around 100ml tomato pasta sauce Caramelised onion chutney 150g mozzarella, grated 50g butter, melted 1 tsp dried oregano 40g Parmesan, finely-grated
Method
1. Pre-heat the oven to 180c/gas mark 4 and line a roasting tin with foil or greaseproof paper. Heat a little vegetable oil in a large, non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for around 8-10 minutes or until nicely caramelised on the outside and thoroughly cooked through.
2. Meanwhile, carefully split the whole batch of rolls horizontally and lay the bottom base of the rolls in the lined tin. Generously spread each base with the tomato sauce and a little dollop of caramelised onion chutney, then top each one with a sautéed meatball. Sprinkle the meatballs with the mozzarella then cover with the tops of the rolls, pressing down gently as you go.
3. Brush the top of each roll with the melted butter, then sprinkle with the oregano and Parmesan. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, removing the foil for the final 5 minutes to allow the tops to turn golden.
4. Allow to cool slightly before transferring to a sharing platter, for tearing 'n' sharing.

WEEKEND WINES | FEELING BORDEAUX?
|
|
|
|
Bottles from Bordeaux at The Great Wine Co.
According to Bordeaux Magazine, the French region's wine harvest often starts at the end of August. The Great Wine Co. has a fine selection of bottles that showcases France's largest wine-producing region, and one that is home to a huge array of wine styles. From the sun-drenched terraces of medieval St-Emilion to the glacial gravel of the Médoc, Bordeaux is responsible for producing some of the world's most sought-after wines; not only the reds but white and dessert wines, too.

Bordeaux Rouge, La Réserve Lucien Lurton Collection | £13.30 |
|
Deep purple in colour with an expressive nose. Medium-bodied, rounded tannins, packed with red fruits and a touch of spice on the palate. A complex wine with a long finish. The wine is matured in cement and stainless steel temperature-controlled vats for 45 days. It's made at relatively cool temperatures in order to retain as much pure fruit as possible.

Péssac-Léognan Blanc, Château Lamothe-Bouscaut | £22 |
|
A beautifully sumptuous, refined white Bordeaux. Wonderfully complex mix of toasty oak with gorgeous, honeyed, rich-textured palate, beautifully balanced with fresh acidity. Situated in Cadaujac, 200 metres from Château Bouscaut, Château Lamothe-Bouscaut is an old wine estate owned by Sophie Lurton and Laurent Cogombles. Only one of Lamothe-Bouscaut's nine hectares is planted to white grape vines, of which around 70% are Sauvignon Blanc and 30% are Sémillon.

|
Entre-Deux-Mers 'Vieilles Vignes', Château Sainte Marie | £14.75 |
|
This is full of character, while gentler than a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The first impression is of pink grapefruit and gooseberry, with just a suggestion of tomato plant. The smell is so appetising that it invites you to take a sip. Brisk and mouth-watering on the palate, balanced by some breadth and weight of texture. It finishes where it begins with a lovely persistence of pure, zesty citrus flavours. Great to drink now, or you can expect it to gain richness of texture over the next 2-3 years.

Le Relais de Durfort-Vivens, Margaux, Château Durfort-Vivens | £44 |
|
Le Relais de Durfort Vivens is the château's wine designed to provide drinking enjoyment immediately, as well as having medium-term cellaring potential. It has a deep violet-purple colour, black and red fruit aromas, with mineral and woody notes. It is rich-textured, with velvety, supple tannin structure.

The Dandy, Eau de Parfum 100ml | £75 |
|
Penhaligon’s presents The Dandy, an eau de parfum paying homage to endless nights. Let’s take it from the top. A perfectly aged whisky – straight from the oak barrel, a fine vintage for a dapper institution – with a twist: bergamot, of course, full of effervescent charm. Raspberry glitters next to patchouli (you fruity thing), refreshed by cedrat with a syrupy finish – just how we like it. And now for the bass line: ambrox, oak, cedarwood and smoke.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
Werke is a UK-based, under-the-radar auto quarterly focused solely on BMW and the passionate culture that surrounds this brand. There’s only four releases out so far and all are flying out but the publisher, Will Beaumont, is aware the magazine will be a slow burner – anyone who comes across it will want to collect all available issues – and has bumped the print runs a bit higher that you might expect for the average indie. The latest issue looks at the BMW 2002 Turbo, BMW’s turbocharged racecars, the evolution of BMW alloys, the history of BMW’s now defunct research and technology department Technik GmbH and much more, including the standard first first drives and longterm test features.
