In Wayne County, Ohio, agriculture is not merely an industry; it's a foundational element of our local economy. The Wayne Economic Development Council (WEDC) recognizes the critical role that farming plays in sustaining our community's economic vitality, as well as the unique narratives that define us. Kurt Steiner, a seventh-generation farmer whose family has cultivated the land for decades, embodies the story of resilience, community, and unwavering commitment to the future of farming.
Steiner, the eldest of five boys, was raised on a farm established in 1959 by his grandfather. Today, he oversees a legacy that his sons are eager to continue. Celebrating its 65th anniversary, Steinhurst Farms has been more than a family home; it has been an essential part of the local community.
Having graduated from The Ohio State University in 1988, Steiner ventured into agribusiness and garnered a wealth of experience from various roles across the United States, returning home to the family farm in 1994. Alongside his father, uncle, brothers, wife, and now sons, Steiner has been pivotal in expanding the farm from 125 to 700 dairy cows and diversifying its produce to include crops such as corn, hay, soybeans, and other grains.
“We ship approximately a semi-load of milk a day off our dairy,” explained Steiner. “That’s close to 7,000 gallons a day.”
