[Power-Packed Resource #007] Utilizing “Global IDEAS” to promote the hero qualities in your research!
|
|
Over the next few weeks, DER will share “Power-Packed” resources that will help strengthen your success in securing research funding and connect you with outstanding resources to promote your research. In this first Power-Packed Resource, we are highlighting Global IDEAS
[Power-Packed Resource #007]. Global IDEAS is an internationally focused “super team” that rises above where other institutions cannot, to promote international development.
Global IDEAS (formerly OIRC) helps deepen and broaden MSU’s positive impacts in global development. The Global IDEAS team provides services to MSU faculty and researchers who are interested in engaging in international development thought leadership, research, education, and practice. As a part of their work, they curate and distribute the Weekly Funding Update.
The Weekly Funding Update has informed MSU faculty and researchers across campus since 2014 and many report success in using it to secure external funding. The Funding Update includes an average of 20 international opportunities each week, curated for eligibility and divided into thematic areas. Sign up here to receive the weekly Funding Update by email. Once an opportunity has appeared in the Update, this information is available in an online database until two weeks before its due date. There are currently more than 450 funding opportunities in the online database
that may be viewed at any time by MSU faculty, students and staff.
Additionally, Global IDEAS provides a range of opportunities for engagement: community building and networking on campus; panel discussions with leaders from around the world; training and coaching; proposal development; and project implementation.
The Global IDEAS team manage the MSU International Data Portal that provides public-facing information about MSU’s international engagement and helps to build new partnerships.
They also manage an internal database of more than 1,600 MSU faculty and scholars who have interest and experience in international research and development. We use this database to identify individuals and groups who may be interested in specific opportunities and discussions.
If you would like your expertise included in the Global IDEAS faculty database or would like to consult about international research opportunities, please contact us at globalideas@isp.msu.edu. Please reach out to the Global IDEAS Director, Allan Hruska (hruskaa1@msu.edu), with any questions or suggestions about how we can better help our international community and deepen our global impact within the framework of MSU strategic plan.
Join us next week for another “Power-Packed” resource that will help strengthen your success in securing research funding and connect you with outstanding resources to promote your research. Remember DER is here to help. If you have specific questions related to this “Power-Packed” resource or related to your upcoming proposal, please send an email to proposals@egr.msu.edu.

New $2.1M grant to help better understand pathogens
|
|
|
|
Making drinking water safer by fighting contaminants
Providing safe drinking water was a great public health achievement in the 20th century, yet problems persist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 7.15 million waterborne illnesses occur in the United States annually resulting in 601,000 emergency room visits, 6,630 deaths and $3.33 billion in direct health care costs. Michigan State University, a world leader in water research, is working to make our drinking water safer.
MSU has been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, to better understand the amount of pathogens, such as Legionella, and disinfection byproducts in drinking water distribution systems and to assess associated health risks. MSU also will develop a systematic way to monitor water systems.
“It may be hard to believe, but there are no common systematic ways to assess the safe levels of opportunistic pathogens like Legionella in our drinking water — not in the U.S. or anywhere else in the world,” said Jade Mitchell, principal investigator and associate professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering in MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and College of Engineering. “These pathogens can grow in drinking water systems as a result of aging infrastructure and private or unregulated water systems. We are working to create a much-needed assessment system.”
Mitchell said even though disinfectants are used in water systems to control pathogens, these can cause additional problems by reacting with natural organic matter, bromide and other contaminants to form disinfectant byproducts, or DBPs, which also have the potential to be harmful to human health. While some DBPs are regulated by the U.S. EPA, other toxic compounds may still occur and persist.
“We think we are making water safe with disinfectants, but we really don’t know,” Mitchell said. “The human health risks trade-offs between opportunistic pathogens and unregulated DBPs need to be assessed and dealt with.”
The EPA said this research will improve our understanding of how to control contaminants and help inform water infrastructure management and risk-mitigation practices to ensure cleaner drinking water for all Americans.

Spartan spotlight - Venkatesh Kodur named Fellow by Royal Society of Canada
|
|
The Royal Society of Canada has honored Venkatesh K.R. Kodur of Michigan State University for outstanding career achievements.
Kodur, University Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of MSU’s Center on Structural Fire Engineering and Diagnostics, was elected a Fellow of RSC’s Academy of Sciences. Election to the national academy is one of the highest honors in the arts and scientific fields in Canada.
Kodur is an internationally recognized scholar in the areas of structural and fire engineering. He has established a leading-edge, world-class research program that has reached a high level of sustained professional distinction in research and scholarly activities, teaching and public and institutional service.
His unique research in the fire safety field is credited with developing the fundamental understanding on the behavior of materials and structural systems under extreme fire conditions. The techniques and methodologies resulting from his research is instrumental for minimizing the destructive impact of fire in built infrastructure, which continues to cause thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of damages each year in the U.S. and beyond.
Kodur’s industrial background at the National Research Council of Canada, or NRCC, provides him with a unique perspective and his research is highly innovative in combining theoretical depth with highly relevant practical applications.
As founding director of the Center for Structural Fire Engineering and Diagnostics (SAFE-D Center) funded through an MSU Strategic Partnership Grant, Kodur, together with his research team is applying advanced experimental techniques and complex numerical modeling approaches for developing rational calculation methodologies and innovative practical solutions for fire design of various structural systems. For undertaking fire experiments, he designed and developed unique structural and material fire testing facilities (valued at more than $2 million) at MSU, the first of its kind at a U.S. university.
