This weekend, welcome to the first O:Pen weekend by Penang Arts Council, designed to celebrate Penang's culture, dance, music and art. A mainly online programme for this first edition, it also features a live concert at the E&O Hotel, and a live artisan market at Hin Bus Depot.

FILM - THE PIANO, The Screenery, 81 China St, Saturday 3rd April 7pm

1993 period drama film written and directed by Jane Campion and starring Holly Hunter. Set in the mid-19th century, the film focuses on a psychologically mute Scottish woman who travels to a remote part of New Zealand with her young daughter after her arranged marriage to a frontiersman.The Piano was a critical and commercial success, and in 1993, the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making Jane Campion the first and only female director to ever receive this award. It won three Academy Awards out of eight total nominations in 1994.

A concept video featuring Penang musical duo Buddha Beat and dancer Luvenia Kalia. Aranya is centered around an alternate version of Buddha Beat's single, Little Wings. Conceived in their moment of tribulation and lockdown, Little Wings presents the story of a bird breaking out of its cage, taking its first flight and its first taste of freedom. The 2020-2021 Covid-19 pandemic has shaken the Malaysian art scene to its core in many aspects. Not only the artists and their production of art work were impacted, but exhibition and exhibition-making itself were negotiated in this new normal. In this forum, the panelists - Rebecca Yeoh, Roopesh Sitharan and Tetriana Ahmed Fauzi will share their experience and exhibition-making “without walls” in these defining times. FILM - THE ALLEYCATS, Online, Sunday 4th April, 2pm

During the late 70s through to late 90s, the Alleycats, a multi-ethnic musical band, successfully broke cultural and racial barriers in the Malaysian recording and performing music industry. Since then, other multi-ethnic musical groups have tried to attain the same level of impact in the Malaysian pop music industry but have fallen short. Why is this so and what is the effect of it? This research film documentary explores the untold stories of the band of brothers.

Some of the best singers and musicians in Penang perform solo repertoire, as for much of CMCO and MCO 2.0 rehearsing with other musicians was impossible, to mark the relaunch of the Penang Art Council.

TALK - REVIVING POTEHI IN PENANG, Online, Sunday 4th April, 10.15pm

Originating from Quanzhou, China, Potehi glove puppet theatre was brought into Penang by traveling performing troupes in the early 20th century. It was a popular form of entertainment especially among the Hokkien community during the many festival celebrations. However, today, only the gods watch the shows at temple festivals. Watch a prominent scholar's efforts to rejuvenate the art of Hokkien Potehi glove puppet theatre in Penang, including the initiation of a collective of young artists known as Ombak Potehi.
