As we continue our remembrance and celebration of African American
Heritage, we focus on Kentucky African American achievers. Five
notable Kentuckians are selected to highlight this week:
Whitney
Moore Young Jr.
(1921 –1971) was born in Lincoln Ridge, Ky. He was an American
civil rights
leader. Trained as a social
worker, he spent most of his career working to end employment
discrimination in the United States and turning the National
Urban League from a relatively passive civil
rights organization into one that aggressively worked for
equitable access to socioeconomic opportunity for
the historically disenfranchised.
Former
President
Richard Nixon delivered the eulogy at Cove Haven
in Lexington Ky. Vernon Jordan was in attendance. Young was a
graduate of Kentucky State College. He
was 16 years old when he enrolled, the youngest in the class. He was
originally buried in Lexington's Cove Haven (or Greenwood) Cemetery,
but
his widow had his body moved to Ferncliff
Mausoleum in
Hartsdale, New York due to the condition of Cove Haven, and the
possibility of vandalism.
Alice
Allison Dunnigan
(1906 – 1983)
was
born in Russellville, KY. She was
an American journalist,
civil rights
activist and
author. Dunnigan was the first African-American
female correspondent to receive White
House credentials, and the first black female member of the
Senate and
House
of Representatives press galleries.
Georgia
Davis Powers
(1923 – 2016) was born in Springfield, KY. She was an American
politician who served for 21 years as a state senator in the Kentucky
Senate.
In 1967, she was the first person of color and the first woman
elected to the senate. During her term, she was "regarded as the
leading advocate for blacks, women, children, the poor, and the
handicapped," and was the chair of the Health and Welfare
committee from 1970–76 and the Labor and Industry committee from
1978-88.
Isaac
Murphy (1861-1896) was
born in Clark County Kentucky, is a Hall of Fame jockey,
who is considered to be one of the greatest riders in American
Thoroughbred horse racing history. Murphy won three runnings of the
Kentucky Derby and was the first jockey to be inducted into the
National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame at its creation in 1955.
He
lived in Lexington Ky. The 1870’s census reveals that Murphy
attended school in 1870, “probably, based on the location of his
residence, at the school housed at Pleasant Green Baptist Church,
pastored by the Reverend Morrison M. Bell who also taught at the
school. The same research stated that Historic Pleasant Green
“provided not only a spiritual home for America and her family but
also role models of acceptable male behavior for Isaac” thus
playing a pivotal part in developing his character.
Oliver
Lewis (1856-1924)
was
born in Fayette County, KY. He was an American jockey in Thoroughbred
horse racing. On May 17, 1875, Lewis won the very first Kentucky
Derby aboard Aristides. The pair won by a reported two lengths,
setting a new American record time for a mile-and-a-half race.
Let
us continue to remember and celebrate our Kentucky
African-American
Heritage. To
God be the Glory!
