Pleasant Green Historic Highlight
At Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church in Lexington, the fourth oldest Black church in the country and the oldest west of the Allegheny Mountains, direct-action and protests were key components of church life during the leadership and ministry of Rev. William Augustus Jones Sr.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Under him, Pleasant Green,
“… became one of the most politically active Black churches in America….” leading boycotts, protests, and sit-ins. On March 5, 1964, members–both young and old–boarded buses to attend the historic March on Frankfort. Jones’ daughter, Sylvia Harris, then a student at Bryan Station High School in Lexington, was among them. That day, she recalled standing near the capital and how “thrilling” it was to hear King speak. It was one of many protests Harris participated in as a young student. At age 15, Harris was arrested for protesting at a segregated department store in Lexington and spent a night in jail. The arrest, she said, left her more determined than ever to continue protesting injustice.

Harris recalls…“The arrest that kept me locked up overnight took place at the Fayette County Juvenile Detention Center, which was on Old Frankfort Pike. I did, however, spend several hours that night in “the hole” at the city jail, before being transferred in the middle of the night by two white police officers, not knowing where I was going.”

|
This same spirit of defiance and resolve both informed and undergirded the 1964 March on Frankfort. Though often remembered and celebrated because of Martin Luther King Jr.’s presence and involvement, the march neither originated nor was spearheaded by King. Instead, the watershed moment that brought 10,000 Kentuckians to the state capitol was a product of local, grassroots organizing and engagement. That day, protesters–both Black and White, male and female, young and old–stood before the state’s lawmakers and demanded that Kentucky become a true commonwealth for all.

“Jesus Is All The World To Me”
Although it was written back in 1904, the classic hymn, “Jesus Is All The World To Me” reflects on a deep personal faith that resonates with believers today and beyond.
Gospel Songwriter Will Thompson so candidly penned these words of hope and faith throughout the song…
“Jesus is all the world to me. My life, my joy, my all. He is my strength from day to day. Without Him I would fall. When I am sad, to Him I go. No other one can cheer me so. When I am sad, He makes me glad. He’s my Friend.”
An Ohio native, Thompson started composing songs when he was a teenager. He composed many gospel songs and hymns including “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling.”
He also established the WL Thompson Music company in Ohio which eventually became one of the most successful record companies in the United States.
“Jesus Is All The World To Me” shows total reliance on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The lyrics are deeply rooted in scripture and clearly reflect the idea that Jesus is our all, our life, and our everything.
Biblical themes of the song can be found in,Colossians 1:18 which says, “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”
And Colossians 3:11 states, “Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.”
To God Be The Glory for songs like “Jesus Is All The World To Me”. This beautiful hymn has blessed so many since it was composed and published in the early 1900s. Through sadness or happiness, Jesus is still all the world to Christians. Whatever may occur on this earth may we as believers rely on Christ alone, for He is our Strength, Comforter, Defender, and Friend.

BLACK
HISTORY

THE
WHY AND IMPORTANCE OF BLACK HISTORY, HOPE

THE WHY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CONTINUED OBSERVATION OF BLACK
HISTORY: Parents and teachers please use this information with your
children, teens, and students.
To you our
precious children, and teens we implore you to be the best you that
you can BE! BLACK HISTORY MONTH Exists because of a need for black
Americans to unify our corporate efforts to continue to make progress
as citizens in not just the United States of America but in the
entire world as well despite all our struggles to do so.
By struggles I am talking about
hardships. Black Americans have faced a lot of cruel things in this,
our country. God instructed Moses to write this verse in Genesis
50:20 about the actions of cruel people it says, “You meant to hurt
me(us). But God turned your evil into (our) good. It was to save the
lives of many people. And it is being done (even this very day).”
God also instructed the Apostle
Paul to write Romans 2:28 assures us, “And we know (beyond all
doubt) that for those who love God, that is, for those who are called
according to his purpose(God’s purpose), that all things are
working together for (their)good.

During February, the Youth Ministry will present on a Black History figure or a Hero of Faith in the Church, past or present, every Sunday to celebrate Black History Month! This is an exciting opportunity for our Youth to share an important piece of African-American history and culture with our Church family from a Youth perspective. Although every month is Black History to us, we are thrilled to share the beauty of our heritage, through intellectual, emotional, and spiritual stories. We hope you enjoy our presentations as we honor our ancestors!
The Youth will continue to meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at the Church at 7pm (*correction from last month's article.) We welcome ALL Youth and we encourage you to bring a friend! We look forward to studying more great characters of the Bible in depth. We have a jam-packed calendar of events this year, including several events planned for this month for Black History Month, so please join us! All reminders and events will be posted in our GroupMe messaging app. Contact Sis. Heather Happy (859.509.2927) for additional details.
Yours in Christ, Youth Directors

Name: LeAndrea “LeA” Hayden
Current Focus: I
am a new mother. My focus right now is being the best Mom that I can
be! My daughter is 4 months. Her name is Clarke. She is the most
important thing to me.
Career: My
previous career was that of a flight attendant for American Airlines.
I was based out of Chicago and then Dallas. That all changed with
Clarke. About 5 months into my pregnancy, my doctor advised me to
refrain from flying and from handling objects over 50 pounds.
Why this Career?:
I chose to be a flight attendant because I needed to grow. Taking the
leap of faith and moving away from home was a good decision for me.
It was time for me to fly outside of my parents’ nest. It was time
for me to fly on my own. So, I did! I joined American Airlines where
we, “fly the friendly skies.” 😊 Now that I am a parent, I
have relocated back to Lexington. I have a job and I am exploring
careers that will be best for me as a working mother. My top priority
is helping Clarke grow into a woman of GOD with wings to courageously
fly the path GOD has for her.
What do you want
your church family to know about you?: I am an easy person to talk to
if you need a listening ear or an available shoulder. If a member of
our church family ever needs a shoulder to cry on, I am willing to be
there. I am also willing to be there to listen to you and to pray
with you. In the end, we are all family! Family prays for one
another!
Family also
shares who they are. I am very artsy. I am also great with children
and kids. I have two teen brothers. They helped me recognize that I
am good with that age group. I work best with teenagers. I want to
give my best to our church family, so I am drawn to working with the
youth ministry.
As a youth, I was
an active student at Bryan Station Senior High School. My activities
included being a Varsity Cheerleader. Defenders for Life! I graduated
from Bryan Station and went on to EKU. I was a cheerleader at Eastern
before I seized the opportunity to be a flight attendant.
GOD blessed me to
see the world. I learned many things about myself as a flight
attendant. One thing I learned was that I do not like long flights!
😊 Sounds weird, huh? One of my co-workers did not like heights. 😊
It is amazing what you can learn about yourself and the world when
you take a wise risk. One thing you learn is how to positively adapt.
I adapted by deciding to take flights mostly in the United States,
Canada, and Mexico.
I saw every state
in the US except Oregon. I also went to Jamaica, the Dominican
Republic and Puerto Rico. Flying was something that I really enjoyed
during that season of my life. Now I am eagerly embracing my new
season. I trust GOD. GOD is a faithful and all-knowing pilot. HE
protects you and never lets you journey alone!
Is there anything
special your church can do for you? Keep me in your thoughts and
prayers as I expand my job search. Everyone goes through things, of
course. My “going through” includes discovering what GOD wants me
to do next. I pray to move from a job to another career. Please join
me in praying for an opportunity that is fulfilling and in alignment
with what GOD wants me to do.
What do you want
your church family to know about GOD?: GOD is loving. GOD is
forgiving. GOD will be there for you no matter what! If you feel like
you have absolutely nobody, know that you have GOD!
I grew up in our
church so it’s like GOD was always there. It was different for me
when I got to Chicago. I felt alone. That is when I had to draw on my
own faith. That is when I grew from understanding that GOD will never
leave me to KNOWING that GOD will never leave me. GOD will NEVER
leave you alone! Trust. Believe. GOD is ALWAYS with you!

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
