David Pankenier (BA '68) sent in this story: "I graduated from the U of R in 1968. My professional interest in the history and cultures of East Asia in the earliest period began somewhat later. But while at the U of R the experience of taking courses from Profs. Hayden White and Norman O. Brown truly awakened me to the life of the mind and set me on the path. I can share one memorable occasion when on a whim, before Prof. White arrived for class one day, as a joke I wrote on the blackboard the stern warning to King Belshazzar, 'You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting' from the famous episode of the writing on the wall in the Book of Daniel: —Mene, mene tekel upharsin.— Blissfully unaware that I had misspelled 'tekel' as 'tenkel,' I took my seat and waited to see Prof. White’s reaction. When he arrived, he glanced at the blackboard, picked up an eraser, deleted the the errant 'n', and began the class."
