Boat Shrink Wrap Pilot Project update!
Earlier this year, CMP staff helped launch a pilot project through the Council of the Great Lakes Region’s Circular Great Lakes initiative to help marinas in Chicago and Lake County properly recycle boat shrink wrap and keep this valuable plastic film out of landfills.
The boat shrink wrap film was captured at each of the participating marinas with the help of SWALCO and Chicago Harbors, shipped to LRS’s Northbrook Material Recovery Facility for consolidation, bailing and storage, and then transported to Myplas USA’s new state-of-the-art plastic film processing plant in Rogers, Minnesota before being provided to Wisconsin-based Charter Next Generation so that the pellets can be tested for reuse as recycled content in plastic film applications, such as new boat shrink wrap.
Marinas that participated in the pilot program are Chain O’ Lakes Marine, Fox Lake Harbor, Liberty Marina, Munson Marine, and Skipper Bud’s in Lake County and Crowley's Yacht Yard, Forest View Marina, and Montrose Harbor in Chicago.
The numbers are now in and in this first year of the program 10.56 tons (21,120 lbs) of boat shrink wrap were collected!
