There were 373,000 bankruptcy cases (both commercial and consumer) in the first 11 months of 2021, the lowest number since 1985. COVID-related government aid were key drivers. Other key factors? Lender forbearance and the increasing popularity of bankruptcy alternatives.

The well has run dry with respect to stimulus: we predict there will be no more government subsidies. We also predict interest rates and inflation will continue to rise. Supply chains are still not great, and some remain in total disarray. And, COVID cases will continue to cause a great number of absences at work (both among those who are sidelined for a week or two with infection and those who will continue to be part of the Great Resignation). Bottom line: get ready for a scary economic ride.
