Leadership Tip: Heartedness Wins
Respect Opens Doors To New Opportunities In Abecedarium of Leadership for the new era, respect is, according to your choices, tied for the second place.
Zoran Milivojević in his book Emotions defines respect as "the feeling of a subject towards a person who has, in his opinion, properties, which he greatly appreciates." Respected, therefore, is someone we consider important, someone we can count on. Milivojević also says that feeling of respect does not refer to the individual as a whole, so a situation may occur where someone hates an individual, but still respects him for one of his attributes.
Leadership of the new era must add a new dimension to respect. Respect is a virtue that allows us to see the world with different eyes. With respect we give recognition to ourselves and our surroundings. For this I am referring not only to respect the talents, but also disadvantages.
All this forms a whole. If we approach ourselves and whole life with respect, we are introducing substantially different energy to a relationship and bring it to a higher quality.
Robin Sharma in his book The Leader Who Had No Title lists respect as one of the four natural powers held by everyone: "Everyone of us, who is alive and is aware of the truth about leadership, is capable of showing respect, understanding, and affection to everyone he is involved with - and thus raise the culture of the company to the best of its kind. You do not need a title for that."
Mutual respect, love and gratitude are the keys to spiritual development. Book Reawakening the Spirit in Work for example, talks about the development of relations from the limits of civility through kindness and care to reverence and high respect. High respect, according to the author Jack Hawley, is composed of dedication, zeal and enthusiasm. In this we find a lot of admiration and reverence, deep conviction and a genuine trust. These are the characteristics of excellent organizations. High respect means higher level of commitment to work.
Danah Zohar in the book Spiritual Capital tells us how we can change the world: "If deep down in ourselves and in our relations with others we trade knowledge for exploration, winning and losing for exchange, power for respect and love, and proving our right for exploring possibilities and listening, we could actually change ourselves and the world." How do you build and show respect and thereby change yourself and the world?
