In our clinic, we commonly find deficiencies in certain nutrients among our autistic patients. This is backed up by clinical research, which suggests that such deficiencies contribute to many of the debilitating symptoms associated with autism.
In my latest article for Autism Eye Magazine, I profile the top 10 nutrients that can be real game changers when we supplement them to optimise levels in autistic children. Check out the article for more details on supplement options and the best food sources.
1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids can improve cognitive function and reduce hyperactivity and stereotypical behaviours in children with autism.
2. Vitamin D: Studies have found that vitamin D supplementation can improve symptoms of autism, including social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression.
3. Magnesium: One of the most common and significant deficiencies seen in children with autism, which can contribute to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, constipation, poor focus and concentration, stimming, and sleep disturbances.
4. Zinc: An essential mineral for optimal immune system function and protein metabolism. Zinc Deficiency is associated with symptoms including poor appetite and decreased cognitive function.
5. Vitamin B6: Commonly low in children with autism, vitamin B6 is needed for the production of neurotransmitters, the proper functioning of the immune system, and the metabolism of proteins.
6. Folate: This type of B vitamin is essential for the optimal function of the nervous system and the metabolism of DNA. Low folate levels can contribute to fatigue, depression, and anaemia.
7. Iron: Low iron can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, decreased immune function, and poor cognitive function. Supplementation is complex as iron’s availability to be absorbed by the body is influenced by many factors.
8. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to support the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body. Fatigue, poor immune function, and frequent infections may be signs of depleted vitamin C.
9. Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell production and nervous system health. Low vitamin B12 levels can contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, anaemia, and cognitive problems.
10. Probiotics: Children with autism are over four times more likely to develop gastrointestinal problems. Probiotics can be helpful when supplemented at the right stage of a gut health protocol.
