Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Paschal Lamb Lives!”
Aim: Understand Matthew’s
account of the Resurrection;
Embrace
the
possibilities of liberation found in Jesus’ resurrection
and Live
courageously
in freedom that Jesus gives.
Background:
Matthew 28:1-10
Bible Lesson:
Matthew
28:1-10
“Then
said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go
into Galilee, and there shall they see me.” Matthew
28:10 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The events of our lesson
transpired after the crucifixion of Jesus at Golgotha (Aramaic) also
called, Calvary (Latin) a
skull-shaped hill outside
ancient Jerusalem. The
four Gospel accounts record these events (Matthew
8:1-10, Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; and John
20:1-10). Matthew mentions two
Mary’s, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary.
We learn from Mark’s account
that the other Mary is
the mother of James. Mark
mentions a third woman, Salome joining
the other women as they purchased
sweet spices and ointment to anoint Jesus’ body after the after
sabbath. Mary Magdalene was
the recipient Jesus’ miraculous healing
that cast out
seven devils out of her spirit. The other Mary is the mother of
James the Less and perhaps the
mother of another disciple.
We learn in Luke’s account that the women had accompanied Jesus
from Galilee. These and other women were followers of Jesus and
contributors to the financial
support of Jesus’ earthly ministry. These women had stayed close
and witnessed the cruelties sustained by Jesus including the
crucifixion. They had followed and witnessed Joseph of Arimathea’s
kind act in taking Jesus’ body from the cross, wrapping it in a
linen cloth, and placing it
in his
new tomb. The women
decided among themselves to return after the sabbath to properly
anoint Jesus’ body
for burial even though they did not have a plan for rolling away the
stone that had been placed at the entrance to the tomb. It
is clear from their plans that they were surprised and did not
expect to see a
Risen Savior!
-
Matthew
28:1-8,
Women at the Tomb: In
the wee hours of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and Mary
the mother of James returned to the tomb where Jesus was buried.
Suddenly there was an
earthquake and angel of the Lord rolled away the stone that had been
placed at the entrance to the tomb. The angel took a seat upon the
stone. The writer describes the angel as having a face shining like
lightning and wearing garments as white as snow. Additionally, the
writer records that the Roman soldiers who had been assigned to
guard the tomb were so
startled by the earthquake
and the appearance
of the angel that they
entered into shock that was
likened unto
“dead men.” These guards were in
placed to prevent the
disciples from stealing the body and pretending that Jesus had risen
from the dead as He had said. The angel comforted the women with the
words, “Don’t be afraid!” He further acknowledged that he knew
that
they were seeking Jesus, who was crucified. But he exclaimed that
Jesus was not there, that He had risen from the dead
just as He had said! The angel invited the women to enter the tomb
to see where Jesus’ body had been layed.
Then the angel instructed the women to
make haste and tell Jesus’
disciples that He had risen from the dead and that Jesus was
returning to Galilee where he would
meet them.
The angel prompted them to
remember what Jesus had told them before
His death on the cross.
With both fear and joy, the women turned and began running to give
the Good News to the disciples as directed by the angel. At this
point, the women had
the word of the angel
as to what had happened to Jesus’ body.
-
Matthew
28:9-10,
Jesus Appears to the Women:
As the women hurried to
deliver
the message of Jesus’ resurrection to His disciples, Jesus Himself
met them and greeted them. Without a doubt they recognized Jesus,
ran to him, fell at His
feet, and worshiped Him.
They were now eyewitnesses to
Jesus’ resurrection from death to life. Jesus uttered
the same
words of comfort as He had offered so
many times in the past,
“Don’t be afraid!” Then
Jesus echoes the same message of the angel, “Go tell my brothers
to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.” Jesus calls
His disciples “brothers” indicating His application
of His limitless
forgiveness of their denial
and abandonment as He
suffered at the hands of the elders, high priest, scribes, and the
Roman soldiers. We find in
the Gospel according to
Luke, that the apostles did not accept the word of the women. Peter
and John ran to the tomb to see for themselves to
confirm the women’s
report. After His
resurrection, Jesus
made
many appearances which
provided additional
eyewitnesses who could
testify to
His
resurrection from the dead.
Take
Aways:
-
Jesus
is risen from the dead after paying our sin debt on the cross,
conquering both death and the grave, which assures that our sin debt
has been paid and we too no longer need to fear death for the dead
in Christ will rise again!
-
Jesus
is true to His Word, He told the disciples in advance that He had to
suffer and die, but on the third day He would rise from the dead.
Indeed He arose with all Power in Heaven and Earth!
-
We
must tell the Good News, with a
belief
in Jesus, our sins will be forgiven and death will
no
longer
have hold
over us for we have inherited Eternal Life!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“He
is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where
the Lord lay.” Matthew
28:6 KJV
“From
that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he
must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and
chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the
third day.” Matthew
16:21 KJV
“Let
not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I
would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go
and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto
myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.” John
14:1-3 KJV
“And
as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the
Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life.” John
3:14-16 KJV
“But
I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which
are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also
which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto
you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain
unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive [and] remain shall
be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in
the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort
one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians
4:13-18 KJV
