Autumn Term Short Course
The fall of the Roman Republic provides an excellent example of politics in action and lessons over the dangers of a polarised electorate, parties moving to the extremes and the rise of increasingly powerful individual citizens through a combination of wealth, demagoguery, military success.
Once again, Dr Peter Crawford will bring his expertise in all things Roman to H.M. Classics Academy with an 8-week course complementing the UK Classical Civilisation and Ancient History syllabi.
This class will look at a variety of subjects, persons and events - the constitution of the Roman Republic both in theory and in practice, the territories and peoples conquered by Rome, the effects that that empire had on Roman society and politics, the violent deaths of the Gracchi and the affect their careers had on Roman politics, and the rise of powerful generals like Marius, Sulla and Pompey, who provided the template for the men who would kill and then harvest the corpse of the Republic, Julius Caesar and his great-nephew, Augustus.
This course will be of value to students and teachers, or anyone fascinated by the history of the Roman empire.
Classes will be conducted online via Zoom on Tuesdays at 19:00-20:00 (UK/Ireland local time) on 27th September, 4th October, 11th October, 18th October, 25th October, (no class on 1st November), 8th November, 15th November, and 22nd November. Fee: £56.
