Women's Leadership Symposium

The Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) is partnering with the Center for Inclusion & Social Change, Colorado Athletics and the Center for Student Involvement for Women's History Month. 

Imani McGee-Stafford is an abuse survivor, mental health advocate, poet, and self-described unicorn. The Inglewood, CA native is most notably known for her prolific basketball career. She played collegiately at the University of Texas at Austin where she became the first basketball player, man or woman, to garner over 1000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 200 blocks. She was drafted 10th overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft to the Chicago Sky and has since played for the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings. She has also played professionally overseas in Turkey, China, Israel, Australia, and Lebanon.

The Woman King

Woman King beautifully captures an African feminist premise rooted in the empowerment of women. Many people like myself never imagined the day when Hollywood would tell all stories, including that of African women, from perspectives of empowerment and upliftment rather than demise and subjugation. Creating a world that quite frankly should be seen by everyone. The film captures nuances seldom depicted on screens.

Help Will Meet You On the Way by Keren-happuch Odinenu

 Help Will Meet You on the Way is a documentary project that was inspired by Keren-Happuch Odinenu's life and experience in Boulder, as well as those of my friends who came to Boulder from different parts of Africa for school. The central idea is community. Through this theme, Keren-Happuch wanted to show that even though we are on challenging journeys, we are not alone. It is Keren-Happuch's hope that everyone who watches will be inspired to take that step to help the next person, be inspired to be vulnerable enough to love and be loved, to help and be helped.

Set in Boulder, this film follows the lives of 6 Africans: Nana Yaa Asante-Darko, Emmanuel Bamidele, Damilola Akinneye, Chidinma Nwaneto, Kweku Botwe and Bola-Pius Odunaro.
