The Third Sunday of Advent |

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, Dec. 11 |
|
|
|
Our dear St. Philip Neri Parishioners,
Greetings and blessings from Fr. Mike and Fr Bill,
“When, Lord, did we see you hungry or thirsty, naked or in prison?”… “When you did it to the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me (Jesus).”
In the world’s plan – of competition – there are winners and losers. In God’s plan – of competition – there are only WINNERS.
Recently some parishioners celebrated a Christmas social, a delightful evening to meet and greet, to enjoy tasty hors-oeuvres, and then a sumptuous supper of turkey and trimmings. During the evening, there were several door prizes and the usual 50/50 winner. As the evening unfolded, a piece of paper was handed out to each table – a quiz concerning various Christmas carols and Christmas traditions of the past. What made the experience “interesting”?
The pastor stopped at one table asking, “Do you need some help?” Rather than a response of cooperation and appreciation, the questionnaire was covered with a napkin and several arms, with the admonition, “Find your own answers at your table!”
Others asked, “Can we google the answers?” with a sharp response, “There will be no cheating!” A third (interesting response) was, “Follow the rules – each to their own table!” When the pastor again wanted to ‘trade answers’ with another table, he was reminded to “follow the rules”!
What seemed “interesting, but strange” about the whole experience was that the dynamics of the questionnaire seemed to be devoid of the Christmas messages and Christmas spirit: Peace on earth, good will to all. Rather, it seemed to be a contest - we win, you lose - even though there was no prize for the table who had the most correct answers. My thought - even if there was a prize (a box of chocolates), it would seem most appropriate for the winning table to share the prize with everyone else.
Was the purpose of the exercise to discover more about Christmas traditions and music – to build community – or was it to “win over” someone else?
If we are truly living as a Parish Family, then it seems that we would always help each other in all circumstances. “Competition”, (in God’s plan) and in the spirit of Christmas and gospel values, then means, not to be better than others but rather to make others better – to learn and grow and discover TOGETHER, so that we are all WINNERS. When we do what is best for each other, we reflect the glory of God; we glimpse the presence and face of Christ in each other’s eyes. Then there is no place in our hearts for winners and losers, only the goodness of the meek and humble birthing of Jesus in our lives and families and Parish.
May the blessings and graces of this Advent Season touch our hearts and transform our souls as we live in the fire and Spirit of Immanuel – God with us, God in us.
Something from the Parish:
PLEASE NOTE: At this Saturday/Sunday liturgies, (Dec. 10-11), there will be a second collection, in response to the Diocese’s support of the healing and reconciliation initiatives for residential survivors and their communities. In the encouraging words of the Bishop William McGratten (Bishop of the Calgary Diocese): “There is no single step that can eliminate the pain felt by residential school survivors, but by listening, seeking relationships, and working collaboratively where we are able, we hope to learn how to walk together in a new path of hope.”
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
Wherever you go, go with God … Whenever you go, go make a difference.
Fr. Mike & Fr. Bill

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
Wow - what a difference a day makes! Welcome back, milder temperatures! And it looks like we are going to be blessed with some single digit temperatures right into next week! Yay! It sure makes life a lot easier - and a lot more enjoyable - when we don't have to worry about frostbite setting in within 30 seconds of being outside! Ah, yes ... good old SK winters!
Here we are arriving at the Third Sunday of Advent already, which means only two more weeks until we arrive at the Holy day of Christmas. As we light the third Advent candle, the "JOY" candle, we think of the incredible joy we will be experiencing - and the immense gratitude - when God himself joins us here on earth, the Saviour of the world, in the form of a helpless, squirming infant. O Holy Night, indeed! We continue on our journey through Advent, preparing and waiting, with great anticipation, for this great Joy to arrive and overwhelm our hearts, with hope, peace, and now, joy.
